There is evidence that plants have been used for medicinal purposes for over 60,000 years.
Unfortunately today, we have lost touch with nature and often turn to lab-made pharmaceuticals to heal.
In this thread I’ll go over powerful herbs & spices and their medicinal benefits.
Chamomile
Often consumed in the form of tea, chamomile is most known for it’s relaxing and anti-anxiety properties. Many people use it as a night time tea to promote sleep.
It also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used to aid minor digestive problems as well.
Turmeric
Curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Not only can it reduce inflammation and increase antioxidant capacity, but it can even boost BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor).
Black Seed Oil
Black seed oil comes from the Nigella Sativa plant, native to Eastern Europe and Western Asia.
It has a long list of benefits due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, including:
-Inflammation reduction
-Immune boosting
-Skin health
-Wound healing
Gingko
Gingko is one of the oldest tree species and a popular herb in Chinese medicine.
It is known for brain health, and is used for many conditions associated with aging including dementia, poor circulation, and Alzheimers. It’s also been used to treat asthma & bronchitis.
Echinacea
An herb native to the midwestern US, it is often used to strengthen the immune system and fight off the common cold & flu.
This can be taken in the form of tea, juice, powders or supplements.
Garlic
Garlic has been used all over the world in cooking and for its many medicinal properties.
The compounds in garlic have been shown to have antimicrobial, cardioprotective and anti-inflammatory properties.
Some say it may even lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
Evening Primrose
The oil extracted from the evening primrose flower has been used to treat symptoms of PMS, PCOS, inflammation and mild skin conditions like acne and eczema.
It is typically taken as an oral supplement or applied topically.
Milk Thistle
Milk thistle has been used for many different illnesses over the last several thousand years, but mostly liver problems.
It’s also be used to prevent age related brain decline, bone protection, & boost breast milk production.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon has been prized for its medicinal benefits for thousands of years and for good reason.
It has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, can improve insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar, reduce neurodegenerative disease, and more.
Lavender
Lavender’s use dates back all the way Ancient Egypt.
It is most known for its relaxing and anti-anxiety properties. Using lavender essential oil for relaxation is quite popular.
It can also be used for headaches, depression, hair loss and wound healing.
Holy Basil
Native to southeast Asia, holy basil has a long history within Indian medicine to treat all kinds of conditions.
It can be used to reduce stress & anxiety, protect against infections, lower blood sugar, reduce inflammation and has antioxidant properties as well.
Blue Lotus
Blue lotus flower has been used for thousands of years as a traditional medicine of the ancient Egyptians.
Commonly consumed as a tea, it has been used to improve sleep, reduce anxiety, reduce erectile dysfunction and act as an aphrodisiac.
Ginger
Gingerol is the main bioactive compound in ginger which is responsible for its medicinal properties.
It’s been used to aid digestion, reduce nausea, and can also help fight the flu and common cold.
Fenugreek
Fenugreek has been used for thousands of years in Chinese and alternative medicine.
It has been used to increase testosterone in men, increase breast milk production in women, reduce inflammation, control diabetes & blood sugar, and more.
St John’s Wort
St Johns Wort flowers have been used to make oils, tea and pills.
Multiple studies show it helps treat depression, as well as speed up healing for wounds, bruises and burns.
Valerian Root
Valerian has been used as a medicinal herb since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome.
It is most well known as a sleep aid, but also has been used to reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure and ease menstrual cramps.
