Red Light Therapy: The glowing medicine you need in your life
Using light to heal isn’t a new concept
It's been used for thousands of years in different ways
More recently, after many research papers…
Red & near-infrared light’s healing benefits have gained quite some steam in the health community
Ancient civilizations were intuitively aware of the healing properties of the sun
They even worshipped its power through their gods
The Ancient Egyptians called it heliotherapy
Hippocrates in Ancient Greece prescribed frequent light exposure to depressives
He believed the sun made Greeks "more optimistic" compared to their northern neighbors
Today
Modern Science has isolated the specific wavelengths of sunlight which can be broken down into 3 parts:
UV light
Visible light
Infrared light
I'm going to discuss the healing properties Red and near-infrared light only
This spectrum of light can be identified as the reddish hue you see at sunrise and sunset in the sky
Light therapy, particularly the red/infrared frequency, has been studied since the 1950s
Other names include:
Low-level light therapy
Photobiomodulation
Red Light therapy
Now, You may be wondering: “What makes red/infrared light so healthy and why do I need it?”
Let’s dive deeper…
Every living being produces energy to live
ATP, also known as adenosine triphosphate is the organic chemical that fuels your cells & is produced in your mitochondria (powerhouse)
Your brain is the biggest user of energy in your body, followed by your muscles
Research shows that more muscle mass = more mitochondria = more ATP
As you get stronger, the energy demands of your body skyrocket
Your cells respond by making more mitochondria but that takes a LOT of work at the gym to happen
Red light Therapy works in a quicker way
It makes your mitochondria more efficient
All you have to do is stand in front of a lamp or the sun for it to happen
Simply said
Red light accelerates how your body heals itself
The sun is the source of energy for many processes
Solar panels to produce electricity
Plants that use solar energy for photosynthesis
Your cells are no different
Like a human battery
You can use solar energy to supercharge your wellbeing
There are certain parts of your body that have lots of mitochondria:
Brain/Nervous system
Immune system
Muscle
Heart
Liver
Red light (in theory) is able to directly stimulate these important centers to provide several benefits
Red and infrared light are very special frequencies
They have a wavelength between 600-1100nm & are able to pierce directly through your body tissues (skin/organs/bones)
The benefits of Red light therapy are numerous & the studies are very promising
From mood to infertility to hair growth to sleep
There’s almost nothing it can’t seem to help
1) Improves cellular health
Red light therapy helps your cells make more ATP (like I mentioned earlier) w
Your cells “breathe” better = more energy
2) Immune system regulation
Red light therapy has been shown to enhance immune cell activity
This is important for those of you with autoimmune diseases
It also helps you deal better viruses or bacteria and is a potent anti-inflammatory
3) The Bystander effect
Research shows that even if you only shine red light in one part of your body
There's a complete systemic effect
4) Increases Oxygen uptake
Oxygen is the currency of cellular life
Red light therapy has been shown to create a low-grade stress (hormesis) on your cells
This stimulates antioxidant production
Antioxidants (The garbage pickers) clean up your metabolic “junk” & refresh your cells keeping you young & full of vitality
5) Mood and cognition
Your brain loves red light
Ever notice how good you feel spending time in front of the sunset or at sunrise?
That because the sky is full of red and infrared light that heals you from the inside out
If you don’t have access to much sunlight in the winter months
Red light therapy is your next-best bet & offers breakthroughs in depression, Alzheimer's and anxiety treatment
6) Infertility and testosterone
If you aren’t familiar with ball sunning yet
You haven’t spent enough time on this side of Twitter
As crazy as it sounds
There's research out there that Infrared and redlight therapy could improve sperm health
7) Hair growth
In 1968, research on cancer was being done to see if a ruby laser (red light) could shrink tumors
The experiment failed but they realized that where the laser was pointed
Hair growth was observed…
Today there are quite a few sources that tout the hair growth benefits of red light therapy to keep your hairline
8) Skincare
From wrinkles to hyperpigmentation to psoriasis
Red light therapy is a promising form of skin care treatment because it stimulates the production of collagen
9) Diabetes
Some research shows that Red light therapy improves insulin resistance and hyperglycemia
Your body uses sugars as energy better & can even support diabetic wound healing as well
Now that you know all these benefits
You need to use the power of red light therapy to your advantage
If you live in a sunny place and want to do it for free
Spend time outside in the sun in the early morning (7-10am) and at sunset
10 minutes is the bare minimum dose
For you winter dwellers, a red light therapy lamp is a must
It makes a huge difference in your overall mood & energizes you on the winter blues days
Beginners can start at 20 minutes per day preferably when you wake up and go to bed to mimic the real sun
Right now, I'm using a Dermabeam 300w
It's compact so I can move it around with me
