Why I never workout for more than 75 minutes per week…
And why you should (probably) train even less than I do.
Here's why:
Let's quickly define exercise:
Exercise is planned, structured, repetitive, and intentional movement intended to improve or maintain physical fitness.
Things like walking, swimming or cycling leisurely are "activity", not exercise. Same idea for playing golf or tennis.
Exercise is usually programmed as "strength" or "cardio".
We'll see why that's a mistake later in this thread.
For now, let's establish that most resistance (strength) training routines are designed for powerlifters or bodybuilders.
And in terms of "cardio", those workouts are typically programmed based on deeply flawed assumptions....
Or they expect normal working people to “train like an athlete”.
Which is a BAD idea...
Especially if you're wanting to lose weight.
What many personal trainers, gym bros or the average YouTuber would have you do to get fit is, in my humble opinion...
Mostly unscientific nonsense.
And most importantly for working people and parents..
A GIANT waste of time.
Plus, doing lots of cardio, such as running, is not going to be great for your joints as you get older.
And don't even get me started about the complete disregard for safety the average personal trainer displays.
It almost feels like they WANT you to get injured.
At this point, we've established three things:
1. Training like an athlete is bad advice for most people
2. Most exercise programs are poorly designed
3. Injury prevention is not factored in most programming
But there's still one thing I said I need to further explain:
Why is conventional exercise a BAD IDEA...
For men and women looking to shed excess weight?
If you had the time, wouldn't MORE exercise lead to MORE weight loss?
The answer is a resounding no.
How can that be?
Doesn't one burn calories when they exercise.
Of course, but it seems to me like 99.9% of people are not accounting for the fact that...
EXERCISE MAKES YOU HUNGRIER!
This is why people looking to LOSE weight should NOT be spending hours exercising each week.
We can debate what the optimal amount of activity might be (such as walking)...
But the fact is that if you want to lose weight...
You should NOT listen to mainstream exercise advice.
No, you don't need to wake up earlier to go for a run.
No, you don't need a treadmill or exercise bike in your home.
And you absolutely, positively, do NOT need more than 2 short, 25-30 minute workouts per week...
To get exceptional results and lose up to 3 pounds per week.
Optimal exercise dosage helps regulate your appetite and your energy levels.
Too much exercise is just as bad as too little exercise.
One could even argue that for those looking to drop excess pounds...
Too much exercise is WORSE than too little because of the extra hunger.
Some of my 1-on-1 weight loss clients exercise as little as once per week, anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.
Now, I don't want you to walk away thinking that exercise isn't a critical lever in fat loss...
Because it is.
But I want to simplify things for you.
If you're looking to lose weight, there is only ONE type of exercise that is required.
I say required because without it, you will lose muscle mass...
Which will slow down your metabolism.
(In addition to making your life more difficult as you age).
That type of exercise, as you probably guessed, is resistance training.
You don't necessarily have to lift weights.
You can use machines, resistance bands…
Or even your own bodyweight.
Over the past 15+ years, I've spent a lot of time thinking about, and experimenting with, different exercise modalities.
I've been a cardio junkie.
And I firmly believe...
You won't get a better bang for your buck than training the way I teach my clients.
So if you're looking to drop 18-48 pounds in the next 16 weeks...
Without exercising more than 50 minutes per week, grand total...
And without going keto...
