1. Excessive acellular carbs
Eating large amounts of acellular carbohydrates like flour and sugar (ones that lack the cell wall), can promote an inflamed gut microbiome. Things like fruit & potatoes have the cell wall intact.

2. Food additives
Additives such as maltodextrin, splenda, carrageenan and many more can all promote gut inflammation.
Splenda, for example, promotes the growth of inflammatory guy bacteria.

Carageenan, an ingredient commonly found an almond milk, can increase intestinal permeability which contributes to leaky gut.

3. Stress
Chronic stress increases intestinal permeability which contributes to leaky gut. This allows inflammatory bacteria to enter blood circulation. Stress also deteriorates the GI mucous layer.

4. Alcohol
“Alcohol has been shown to alter the gut microbiome, disrupt intestinal barrier, and increase intestinal permeability, directly and indirectly promoting immune activation”

5. Gluten
Gluten can promote the release of zonulin, which can increase intestinal permeability as well. It can promote the release of histamine can contribute to gut inflammation.

6. Seed oils
Seed oils are susceptible to damage from heat. When cooked, they easily oxidize and therefore cause inflammatory byproducts that irritate the gut.

7. Circadian rhythm disruption
Your circadian rhythm regulates many aspects of your health, gut health being one of them. Disruption in circadian rhythm has been shown to promote growth of inflammatory gut bacteria.

8. Antibiotics
Unfortunately antibiotics are prescribed extremely frequently today. They can reduce the diversity and abundance of gut bacteria, and have long term, negative effects on the gut.

9. Environmental toxins
Tons of new chemicals are being made my different industries every year, without knowing the long term consequences. There are too many to name, but a great example is BPA.

BPA can increase harmful gut bacteria while also increasing intestinal permeability.

It’s important to note that for most of these things, the poison is in the dose. If you have a healthy gut, some of these things in moderation won’t be a huge issue.
The problem is, these things are extremely common today, and people are being exposed to them far too often.

If you are dealing with major gut or inflammatory issues, it would be wise to avoid these things entirely while you address those issues.
