Modern athletes are increasingly performing at an elite level into their older age
This is how they do it and what we can learn from them 👇
1) Start training for flexibility AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE
Physical decline starts in your 20s
The first thing to start declining is flexibility
15% of shoulder flexion is lost between ages 20 and 30
Research shows that flexibility training as early as childhood can lead to higher gains in adulthood
Modern athletes start focusing on flexibility very early
Takeaway: the earlier you start systematically training for flexibility, the better
2) Data driven injury prevention
Injuries are an under-appreciated cause of deteriorating health and fitness
Not only due to injuries themselves, but due to lost exercise time while injured
Modern coaches and athletes know this
They have become very good at predicting risk of injury and prevention them before they happen
AC Milan sports lab developed an algorithm that could predict the risk of injury from analysing a players jump
You can do this too
One of the biggest predictors of injury is low quality movement patterns during exercise (poor form)
You can formally assess this using the Functional Movement Screen
Or less scientifically by observing changes in your form
Other important predictors of injury:
- Resuming exercising before fully recovering from previous injuries
- Soreness and subjective fatigue
- Measuring changes in HRV using wearables can be useful to predict likelihood of injury
3) adapt to your strengths
Some things improve with age
Sensory perception and decision making get better
Modern athletes lean into this by changing their style of play to suit their strengths
Messi at age 32: “I’ve learned to read the games better, at which moment and where I have to be effective and decisive.”
They also get better at managing emotions
Ibrahimović (age 41): “I used to be pure adrenaline, but now I’m adrenaline and balance.”
P.s. I haven’t commented on the use of PEDs or pharmaceuticals in general which have become way more sophisticated in recent years
