Diet soda is great for fat loss.
Dispelling 7 claims about diet sodas:
Diet sodas:
• Taste great
• Reduce sugar cravings
• Help manage your calorie intake
But are you risking your health by drinking them?
Search online and you’ll start thinking they're killing you.
Here are 7 common claims about them - and what studies say:
1) "Aspartame is poison"
There's a lot of sensationalism here.
It's claimed to cause:
• Cancer
• Diabetes
• Low testosterone
But it’s one of the most studied sweeteners in the world.
There IS a safe daily limit intake for aspartame...
Around 22 cans of diet soda per day.
2) "Diet soda raise insulin levels"
Insulin is the hormone involved in sugar absorption.
Your body releases it as a response to sugar intake.
Diet sodas don’t contain sugar or break down into sugar.
So drinking them doesn’t cause a meaningful insulin response in your body.
3) "Diet soda screws up your gut"
There’s no conclusive studies done on the impact of diet sodas on gut health.
Focus on improving your gut health with:
• Berries
• Probiotics
• Prebiotics
These will do more for you than cutting out diet sodas.
4) "Diet soda cans contain BPA"
BPA is a chemical found in plastics.
Soda cans have a thin plastic inner liner.
The BPA can seep into the liquid inside the can.
But it's a trace amount which is under the safe limit.
5) "Diet soda erodes your teeth and bones"
The acid in sodas, diet or otherwise, dissolves the enamel of your teeth.
To reduce this, drink sodas with:
• A straw
• Your meals
• Some water afterwards
On the claims related to bone health:
Diet sodas contain phosphoric acid.
Excess phosphorous intake, relative to calcium intake, can lead to bone density loss.
But there’s more phosphorous in regular foods like chicken, sardines, and cheese.
You can easily offset this effect with even just a few ounces of milk.
6) "Diet soda causes weight gain and diabetes"
Correlation doesn’t always mean causation.
These issues are usually linked to their other habits:
• Not working out
• Poor food choices
• Already being prediabetic
7) "Diet soda is bad because it's not natural"
Diet sodas aren’t “natural”.
They contain artificial sweeteners.
“You’re better off drinking sugar instead.”
But natural doesn’t automatically mean healthy.
Even an organic banana contains a bunch of chemicals.
So what’s the conclusion?
Diet sodas are a great alternative to sugary drinks.
Having a few in moderation won’t harm your health.
I’d worry less about whether you should drink a Diet Coke...
And more about getting your sleep, nutrition, and exercise in order.
