SOY
A plant based health food or a toxic, feminizing legume?
(Thread)
With the push for plant based proteins, soy consumption has been on the rise and thought of by many as a healthy, meat free alternative
On the other side, people are calling soy enjoyers “soy boys”, claiming eating soy makes you feminine
So what’s the truth? Lets get into it
The truth is, the average citizen eats a lot more soy than they think, and it’s not just from tofu
Soybean oil, soy lecithin and soy protein isolate are very highly processed and becoming common ingredients in a wide variety of products, and not just plant based ones
Some estimates show that the average American gets almost 10% of their total calories from soybean oil!
Now, many argue that soy has been consumed safely in Asia forever, so there’s no way it can be unhealthy. This is not valid.
First of all, most soy consumed in Asia is typically unprocessed and fermented—tempeh, natto, miso and tamari—which counteracts some of the toxins.
Second, a lot of these Asian countries use soy as a condiment; not as an alternative to animal products, like many of the “plant based” eaters in the west.
The average consumption of soy in China is 10 grams per day and is 30 to 60 grams in Japan, which is not that much.
Compare that to the west where almost all of the soy consumption is highly processed and not fermented, and many are resorting to these products instead of nutrient dense, unprocessed animal products.
Not to mention, a vast majority of soybeans in the US are genetically modified
So, what is about soy that is actually bad?
-Soybean oil, the most commonly consumed cooking oil and soy product in the west, is very high in omega 6 which can be inflammatory when consumed in excess
-It’s also unstable at heat, making it prone to oxidation
-Soy lecithin, a product extracted from soybean oil, is an emulsifier in many foods, including protein powders, dairy free milks, chocolate bars, and so much more
-Soy contains high levels of phytic acid which reduce absorption of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc, which can even cause growth problems in children.
-Trypsin inhibitors in soy may disrupt protein digestion
-Soy contains high levels of phytoestrogens which can disrupt endocrine function and even promote infertility
-These same phytoestrogens can also contribute to hypothyroidism
-The processing of soy can produce lysinoalanine and nitrosamines, which can be carcinogenic and toxic
“Infants exclusively fed soy-based formula have 13,000 to 22,000 times more estrogen compounds in their blood than babies fed milk-based formula.” #gsc.tab=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener" onclick="event.stopPropagation()">westonaprice.org
This study showed that men who drank 1 cup of soy milk per day had a significantly lower sperm count than men who didn’t eat soy academic.oup.com
And the list goes on

Now, I’m not here to say that eating some soy once in awhile will kill you and make you grow man boobs.
What I am here to say is that:
-Many people are eating much more soy than they think
-Soy is not a healthy alternative to animal foods
-Eating large amounts of soy consistently can cause a plethora of issues
-Eating traditionally prepared, fermented soy does have some health benefits
So, always check your food labels! If you eat some soy once in awhile, don’t sweat it, just don’t make it a staple in your diet.
