In the last 50 years, obesity rates worldwide have doubled, and tripled in the US
Obesity has healthcare costs that exceed $700 billion each year
Here is why, what to do about it and what it means for society:
(Thread)
In the US today:
-More than 2 in 5 adults are obese
-About 1 in 5 children are obese
In 1980:
-About 1 in 10 adults were obese
-About 1 in 20 children were obese
In just 40 years, obesity rates have gone up dramatically, and as a result, our health is dramatically declining.
Obesity dramatically increases the risk of:
-Type 2 diabetes
-Heart disease
-High blood pressure
-Stroke
-Fatty liver disease
-Some cancers
-Osteoarthritis
And much more, yet the mainstream media wants to tell you that it is healthy🤔
It is the second most preventable cause of both behind smoking, yet we are still headed in the wrong direction.
The truth is, even just a 5-10% weight loss can significantly improve health, quality of life and economic burden.
There are many different causes of obesity, some obvious ones, and some that aren’t so obvious.
Here are some contributing factors:
Reduced physical activity
Estimates show that 100 years ago, people got 5x more exercise than today.
As a society we have become lazier, and modern technology has given us the ability to consume more without having to leave the couch.
As a result, we burn less calories, making it easier to gain weight.
High calorie malnutrition
Food today is far less nutritious than it once was, and ultra processed foods have become more and more common.
Soil depletion has led to significantly less nutrients in our food, yet we are eating more than ever.
We are over-consuming calories while under consuming nutrients. This is a recipe for disaster.
Insomnia
Many studies show that poor sleep is linked to weight gain. Almost 1 in 3 adults in the US experience symptoms of insomnia.
Lack of sleep increases cravings due to hormonal changes like increased insulin resistance, increased ghrelin, and decreased leptin.
Excess artificial blue light
Excess blue light (especially at night) and circadian dysregulation leads to increased stress and hunger hormones, which lead to weight gain.
Blue light at night contributes to symtpoms of insomnia, which as you know can also cause weight gain.
Hormonal imbalance
Cortisol (control your body's use of fats, proteins and carbohydrates, stress hormone)
Ghrelin (“the hunger hormone”)
Leptin (“the satiety hormone”)
Insulin (allows your body to use glucose for energy)
These all play a major role in weight gain, and unfortunately due to the unnatural lifestyle we live today, they are all out of whack.
A healthy thyroid plays a major role as well.
Psychological Addiction
Eating certain food can trigger the increase of dopamine which is associated with pleasure.
Research shows that people with food addictions is respond to food cues the same way alcoholics respond to drinking.
There are many other reasons for obesity, but the truth is the lifestyle we live is completely opposite of how we evolved.
The good news is, It is the second most common cause of PREVENTABLE death.
Here are 6 ways you can easily start to lose weight:
The first and most obvious one, is to simply eat less calories than you are burning.
There are plenty of website that will give you an idea of how many calories you are burning, then eat less than that.
Eat your goal body weight in grams of protein.
Due to the thermic effect of eating food, you burn many more calories digesting protein compared to carbs and fat. It also keeps you much more full than carbs and fat, making it much harder to over eat.
Resistance training
Your basal metabolic rate is responsible for around 70% of your daily calories burned, which is basically the amount of calories it takes to keep you alive. How do we boost our basal metabolic rate? By building lean muscle mass.
Walk more
Walking is extremely underrated when it comes to fat loss, and should be utilized. Make a goal, and build on it every week.
Focus on whole foods
The more foods without an ingredient list you buy, the more nutritious they are and the healthier you will be. The more packaged foods you buy, the more likely you are to consume processed, inflammatory foods.
DON’T TRY TO BE PERFECT
When you begin your weight loss journey, focus on the big picture! You don’t need to go crazy worrying about things like grass fed meat, seed oils and buying a million supplements.
Focus on eating high protein, whole foods and the weight will start to come off. When it does, then you can fine tune and worry about the finer details.
