1/ “I had so much more I wanted to teach or discuss about our patient with hyponatremia, but I couldn’t fit it on rounds. What should I do?”
Check out the following thread for some high-yield tips on teaching after hours!
2/ As a reminder, we are still in our series on inpatient teaching.
3/ First, how often do you use strategies to teach after hours?
4/ Teaching after hours offers many advantages
- Consolidation of that day's teaching points
- Encouraging reading about our patient's clinical scenarios
- Reflection on opportunities to improve knowledge or comfort with given diagnoses or management dilemmas
5/ Below are 3 strategies I use to teach after hours with my learners.
Over the following tweets, let's explore how to match your educational intent with one of these strategies and operationalize each tool for your context.
6/ Emails are an efficient way to communicate many teaching pearls to learners.
Below are things I consider when sending daily emails to learners.
Check out @SatyaPatelMD excellent thread on this for more details :
7/ Here's a sample teaching email I send to residents on service with me. It is essential that such emails are short and succinct with teaching points while providing resources for further reading.
8/ Educational prescriptions are focused assignments to help learners practice the skills of EBM by asking a clinical question and documenting their findings to share with the group.
I like using this strategy with podcasts, as shown in the following tweet.
9/ Below is a framework for a podcast prescription
How does this help learners learn after rounds?
- Supports learning from the patients they see
- Provides scaffold to record learning from educational materials (e.g., podcasts)
- Promotes long-term retention through reflection
10/ Quizzing or asking questions is another way to teach after rounds.
Advantages of quizzing:
- Immediate feedback on what was done correctly or not
- Retrieval practice for concepts discussed on rounds
- Curiosity for learning more from rounds
11/ Below are some of my favorite gamified quiz applications
12/ Regardless of the quizzing software, consider the best practices below.
I generally send 1 quiz a week via email after rounds. I keep them to 3-5 questions max. I review answers at the end of the week to reinforce teaching points.
