Nadars/Shanars contested Caldwell’s theories, the poorest amongst them got converted in scarcity times since they provided rice to them, the term “Rice Christians”!

Most important Jesuit College in 🇮🇳 was founded in 1548, St Paul’s College of Goa connected to the Seminary of the Holy Faith.
Goncalo Fernandes,from Society of Jesus was in Goa by 1562.
In 1587, he was Fr. Francis Durao’s companion at Trichendur.

Fernandes made attempts to reach higher caste people & the Nayak with the gospel but In 11yrs hismission saw no converts from Hindus.
This made study the Sutras, the result was the 1616, treatise of 27 chapters dealing with life of a Bmhman from conception to death.

An Italian Jesuit Roberto de Nobili arrived in Goa in 1605, reached Madurai n 1606, with new methods of converting Hindus who’d failed efforts of Portuguese Fathers.
In his struggle to understand the failure of Madurai mission was confined to Paravas and Portuguese;
