An Akshauhini is a specific unit of the army described with precise numbers for each type of warrior and division of troops. The composition of an Akshauhini is as follows
•1 Chariot (Ratha) is accompanied by:
•1 Elephant (Gaja)
•3 Cavalrymen (Ashva)
•5 Infantry soldiers (Padatika)
From this basic unit, the larger divisions are formed:
1.1 Patti: 1 Chariot, 1 Elephant, 3 Horses, 5 Infantry.
2.3 Pattis = 1 Sena-Mukha.
3.3 Sena-Mukhas = 1 Gulma.
4.3 Gulmas = 1 Gana.
5.3 Ganas = 1 Vahini.
6.3 Vahinis = 1 Prutana.
7.3 Prutanas = 1 Chamu.
8.3 Chamus = 1 Anikini.
9.10 Anikinis = 1 Akshauhini.
Total Strength of 1 Akshauhini:
•Chariots (Rathas): 21,870
•Elephants (Gajas): 21,870
•Cavalry (Ashva): 65,610
•Infantry (Padatika): 109,350
Grand Total: 218,700 troops in one Akshauhini.
This structured arrangement made the Akshauhini a formidable and disciplined military force.

The Mahabharata war at Kurukshetra was fought between the Pandavas and Kauravas, and each side had its respective Akshauhinis.
Pandava Army
•The Pandavas had 7 Akshauhinis, led by various allies like Drupada, Virata, the Kekayas, and others.
The generalissimo of the Pandava forces was Dhrishtadyumna, the son of Drupada.
Kaurava Army
•The Kauravas had 11 Akshauhinis, composed of warriors from across the land, including kings like Bhishma, Drona, Karna, and Shalya. The overall commander at the start of the war was Bhishma.
Total Army Strength at Kurukshetra:
•18 Akshauhinis, or 4,743,600 warriors.
