Mathara was the family servant of Kaikeyi. She was with Kaikeyi since her birth. Manthara was one of the most important characters in Ramayana. She was the one who insisted Kaikeyi to send Prabhu Shri Rama to forest for 14 years and make Bharat the king
According to the Telugu Version of Ramayana..
Manthara was very close to Kaikeyi and loved her as her own daughter. Naturally, she would love Bharata as her own grandson. When all the four children of Dashrath were born, all were happy and Shri Rama was in the limelight
Manthara was very close to Kaikeyi and loved her as her own daughter. Naturally, she would love Bharata as her own grandson. When all the four children of Dashrath were born, all were happy and Shri Rama was in the limelight
Manthara was jealous of Prabhu Ram as Bharata didn't get the attention which Prabhu Ram got and she was biased towards Bharata. It is stated in Telugu version of Ramayana that while Ramlalla, as a child was playing with a ball and stick, Mathara threw the ball far away.
This enraged Prabhu Ram and with the stick which he had in his hand, he hit Manthara on her knee with such a force that she was unable to walk properly for rest of her life. Whenever she used to walk at a snail's pace, she would remember Prabhu Ram with lot of hate
In order to take her revenge of this act of Rama, she poisoned Rani Kaikeyi's mind just before the coronation ceremony of Rama. She reminded Kaikeyi of her two boons and told her to use them in the following ways-
1. Make Bharata the king.
2. Send Rama to forest for 14 years

2. Send Rama to forest for 14 years
Kaikeyi got trapped in Manthara's words and used her boons for the same purpose as said by Manthara.
The reason why Manthara did this act is related to her past life...........
The reason why Manthara did this act is related to her past life...........
In her past life, Manthara was a celestial deer. She possessed magical powers. Once, father of Kaikeyi, in his young days was out for a hunt. He injured a male deer by an arrow. The wife of the male deer immediately ran to her mother for help. Mother was Manthara as a Deer...
Manthara couldn't see the condition of her Son-in-law who was about to die and requested the father of Kaikeyi to remove the arrow from the deer's body. Manthara Could give life to her Son-in-law only if the arrow was removed from his Body
Instead of agreeing to Manthara, Kaikeyi's father removed his sword and slashed Manthara. Manthara, as her last words, cursed Kekaya (Kaikeyi's father) that as he killed Manthara's innocent son-in-law, she would also be responsible for the death of his son-in-law.
As a result, in her next birth, Manthara was responsible for the death of Kaikeyi's husband who is Raja Dasharath ( Kekaya's son-in-law)
And that's how Ramayana happens and Manthara plays an important role in it..

It is even said that Devi Sarswati, the goddess of speech, sat on Manthara's tongue as she poisoned Kaikeyi's mind. The words spoken by Manthara weren't told willingly by Manthara
Manthara was imprisoned in a dark room after Dashrath's death. She understood her mistake and sought forgiveness from Prabhu Shri Ram when he came back from the forest after 14 years.
