In 2020, a group of Ugandans initiated a campaign to decolonize the country's roads. They created an online petition that collected over 5,000 signatures, urging the government to remove the names of British colonial figures from the streets. The road naming and renaming process
- Eligible citizens, including landowners and local committees, must complete a Road Naming Proposal and submit it to KCCA to propose a new or replacement name for a road.
- For new roads, proposals must include a brief background of the name's origin. Names must be approved before applying for Survey Plan sealing, and the approved name should be included on the survey plan. For developments with multiple roads, it is encouraged to use naming themes.
- Valid applications will be forwarded to the physical planning committees and all affected parties will receive a written notification of the decision.
