Everyone talks about legendary writers like:
Hemingway, Stephen King, or Henry David Thoreau.
But there is a British author who redefined the game forever.
Here’s the secret technique J. K. Rowling used to write one of the best-selling book series of all time:
At 32, J.K. Rowling was a single mom on welfare, struggling to make ends meet.
One day, while stuck on a delayed train, the character Harry Potter came to her fully formed.
And she spent the next 5 years meticulously planning the 7-book series before writing a single word.
Today, Harry Potter is the best-selling book series of all time (closely followed by Goosebumps).
Here's a breakdown of the 10-column outline method she used to create Harry Potter:
Rowling's 10-column outline was divided into 2 key areas:
1. Progress & Progression (Time & Chapters)
2. Plot & Characters (Main Plot, Subplots, Characters)
By focusing tightly on all these interconnected elements, she kept readers engaged and the story moving forward.
Each chapter in the series features 3+ interwoven subplots:
β€’ The central mystery (e.g. The Chamber of Secrets)
β€’ Character development (e.g. Ron's insecurities)
β€’ Hogwarts life (e.g. Quidditch matches)
These subplots add depth to each chapter.
In Order of the Phoenix, Rowling streamlined her story:
β€’ 1 main plot (The Prophecy & Voldemort's return)
β€’ 5 subplots (Umbridge, Dumbledore's Army, etc.)
β€’ Under 10 key characters
To make sure she never missed a key plot point, Rowling did a detailed outline:
To add more complexity, Rowling's narrative over the 7 books spans 3 generations:
1. Harry, Ron, & Hermione
2. James, Lily, & the Marauders
3. Dumbledore & Voldemort's origins
Each layer builds on the others, creating a dense wizarding world that feels real to the reader:
Rowling's consistent structure provided a roadmap and built anticipation for the series' climactic finale.
β€’ 1 school year at Hogwarts
β€’ 1 central mystery to solve
β€’ 5 subplots intertwine with the main story
It doesn’t mean there weren’t plot holes, though. Check this out:
That's it!
Rowling's 10-column outline can be any writer's Marauder's Map:
1. Time (When does the story take place?)
2. Chapter (How will you structure your tale?)
3. Plot (What's the main narrative throughline?)
4. Subplots (How will you add complexity?)
5. Characters (Who will drive your story?)
Every storyteller should learn from Rowling's approach:
β€’ Craft a compelling premise
β€’ Develop a detailed outline
β€’ Interweave subplots to add depth
β€’ Create layered generational stories
β€’ Narrow the focus to intensify drama
That's it!
