What’s wrong and what needs to be done
A Thread 🧵
India's Achievement in the Olympics from 2008 to 2024 :
- Bronze: 16
- Silver: 6
- Gold: 2
Why India Struggles for Olympic Medals?:
- Talent Identification: India’s process for finding sports talent is random and often misses young athletes in remote areas.
- Infrastructure and Resources: Many places in India don’t have the right facilities or enough money to train athletes properly.
- Cricket’s Dominance: Cricket is so popular in India that it gets most of the sports funding, leaving little for other sports.
- Weak Sports Policies: India’s sports policies are not well-planned or funded enough to make a big difference.
- Short-term Focus: India’s sports programs aim for quick wins instead of building athletes’ careers over time.
- Corruption in Administration: Politics and corruption in sports organizations hurt the development of athletes.
- Lack of Sports Culture: Indian society values education over sports, making it hard for sports to be seen as a good career choice.
How India Can Improve Olympic Performance?:
- Grassroots Development: India should focus more on finding and training young athletes from all over the country.
- Investment in Infrastructure: India needs to build better training centres and provide complete support for athletes, including mental health, nutrition, and injury care.
- Empowering Athletes : Athletes should have a say in sports decisions to make organizations more responsible and clear.
- Collegiate Sports System: India could create a college sports system like the NCAA in the US to help athletes balance school and sports.
- Cultural Shift: Society should be more supportive of sports careers, and sports should be part of the education system.
- Increased Government Support: The government should give more money and support to Olympic sports.
- Focusing on Growth: India should aim to send more athletes to the Olympics to increase the chances of winning medals.
Sports Development Initiatives in India:
- Khelo India: A government program to support sports at the grassroots level and find young talent.
- National Sports Development Fund (NSDF): A fund to help athletes with training and competition costs.
- Sports Authority of India (SAI): An organisation set up in 1984 to promote sports, managing various schemes for youth and senior athletes.
- National Sports Awards: Prestigious awards like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna Awards that honor top athletes.
- Scheme for Athletes with Disabilities: A program started in 2009 to train and support athletes with disabilities.
- Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan: A 2014 initiative to build sports complexes at the local level for both indoor and outdoor sports.
- Fit India Movement: A campaign to encourage people to stay healthy through sports and exercise.
