The one that got away! šŸ˜… I’d originally planned this road trip for my 2014 backpacking trip across #Europe. But you know how plans go—rarely as planned! So, 10 years later, I’m sharing everything you need to know about the Romantic Road in Germany. I managed to do a tiny part of it in 2019, definitely going back for more.🧵1/9
What is the Romantic Road?
The Romantic Road, or "Romantische Straße" in German, winds through Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Once a trade route, it is now celebrated for well-preserved mediaeval towns and architectural wonders. The road stretches through 29 beautiful towns! I feel it is one of the best ways to experience German culture. 2/9
How much time do you need to drive the Romantic Road?
You could technically drive it in about 4-5 hours without stopping for the ~300-kilometre stretch between Würzburg and Füssen. But seriously, where’s the fun in that? Don’t rush it—even if tours try to sell you on a quick drive. šŸ‘Ž
If you’re short on time, at least 4 days is ideal. If you can extend it, a week or more is perfect for a wholesome experience. 3/9
Best times to travel the Romantic Road?
Honestly, any time you’re free is great!
But if you’re picky, spring and autumn are stellar. Spring is full of blooms and mild weather. Autumn has stunning foliage, fewer tourists, and awesome harvest festivals. Summer’s lively, and winter brings that cosy Christmas charm.
What did I say, anytime is great. Romantic Road is a year-round goodness! šŸ˜‰4/9
Getting around
>By Car: Perfect if you’re the ā€œOh, that spot looks nice, let’s stop thereā€ type. Enjoy the views and local eats. Just avoid highways by following the "Romantische Straße" signs.
>By Train or Bus: Germany’s train/bus system is fantastic and covers all the popular towns. You’ll miss out on some spontaneous finds, but this option proves to be super convenient.
Feeling extra? There’s a Romantic Road cycling route for a unique experience through beautiful landscapes. Drop a 🚓 if that’s calling your name! 5/9
Are there guided tours?
Yep, tons of guided tours are available! From day trips to multi-day excursions, they’re a great way to explore if you like a structured itinerary. Want links? Drop a comment! 6/9
What’s a good route to follow?
Here’s a route to get you started:
Würzburg āž”ļø Rothenburg ob der Tauber āž”ļø Dinkelsbühl āž”ļø Augsburg āž”ļø Füssen.
Feel free to tweak it to fit your style! And don’t miss the less frequented gems along the way. Check out small villages like Tauberbischofsheim and Weikersheim. Consider day trips to the Black Forest and Lake Constance. There’s loads to do! 7/9
