2011 Barcelona using 3-2-2 attacks with a deep full back..
In some ways football has changed so much (profile of the players. It would be difficult to play Mascherano at CB in the set piece coach era) but in other ways it hasn’t changed too much..
It’s always good to go back and watch old matches
Barcelona were often a lopsided back 3 (Abidal deep) with a two in front (one of Xavi (usually) or Iniesta alongside Busquets)
They were rarely 3-2-5 tho as Dani Alves played more midfield/full back than RW
One of differences
Alves actually retreated to reform a
Back 4 as the attack advanced.
It’s interesting looking at this picture because the current 3-2-5 can overload the oppo’s back line but it can also restrict space.
4 players breaking have more room to make different runs.
