Tensions between Israel & Iran have led to fears of war
It seems like Israel has an upper hand with US backing it, but Russia has jumped in to back Iran
The reason? Iran has the power to disrupt 20% of the global oil flow
THREAD: Why US & Russia are fighting the proxy war🧵
When subjected to oppression, people inevitably rise & rebel, fighting back against those who oppress them.
Iran and Israel are the two countries that have demonstrated resilience by asserting their independence and dominance on global level.
Let’s start with Iran first as it has faced major repression & intrusion from super powers such as Russia & the US.
In the 1800s, Russia & Britain attacked & defeated Iran, but never turned it into a colony. Instead, they exploited its resources by making it sign treaties like
— Treaty of Gulistan and Treaty of Paris involving taking control of the Caspian Sea and military rights along with the right to trade in Iran.
Then, during the Cold War, Iran became a battleground for influence between the US and Russia.
Initially, the US aimed to support Iran in its struggle against the 2 countries by providing military aid & economic support.
But the situation took a turn in 1953 when the US & UK orchestrated a coup in Iran to safeguard UK’s interests after Iran nationalized its oil industry.
This move was purely driven by the desire to establish its dominance in the Middle East and get hold of the oil present in the region.
Now, this intervention fueled the anti-western sentiment in Iran and played a role in the emergence of Islamic fundamentalism.
This lead to Islamic Revolution of 1979, during which Iranian people rose up in defiance against present regime & western-backed influence in Iran.
Iran seeks dominance in the Middle East leveraging its large population, resources, strategic location, & revolutionary ideology.
It holds geographic significance at the crossroads of Central & South Asia along with Arabian Peninsula.
How?
With control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, linking Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman & the Arabian Sea, Iran can swiftly disrupt up to 20% of global oil flow.
Now let’s turn our focus on Israel. Over the years we’ve seen Israel as an assertive nation
— which mobilized advanced tech & military in the region to defend itself & protect its interests.
But there are many historical factors that have contributed to Israel’s assertiveness
— in the Middle East & on the global level.
See, Israel is a Jewish state, and that’s why the Holocaust & anti-Semitism has instilled a desire to prevent future harm among its people.
Moreover, the country is surrounded by many hostile neighbors…
…and has been posed by many security threats such as Arab-Israeli wars and Palestinian uprisings, over the years.
On top of it, Israel has been a target of terrorism for decades by suicide bombing, rocket launches and guerrilla warfare tactics.
Israel has been receiving backing from the US since its establishment in 1948, but military & economic aid increased after the 1967 Six-Day War.
But exactly why did the US became a strategic ally of such a small nation, halfway across the world?
Now see, control or influence over the Middle East ensures access to vital oil and gas reserves to the US
— safeguarding its energy interests and global stability in oil prices.
And being a close ally to Israel provides a foothold for American influence in the region.
Also, Israel's intelligence services provided valuable information to the United States
— on regional developments, counterterrorism, and threats to American interests in the Middle East,
even before Israel became militarily advanced.
Now, after discussing the individual dynamics of both the countries, it’s time for us to understand the core reasons why Iran & Israel don’t see eye to eye.
1ļøāƒ£Ā Support for Militant Groups:
Iran’s financial, military, and ideological aid to militant groups such as Hezbollah & Hamas, which carried out attacks against Israel in the past, has fueled the tension between the 2 nations.
2ļøāƒ£Ā Nuclear Program:
Israel, along with the US, sees a nuclear-armed Iran as an existential threat to itself and the rest-of-the-world
— as Iranian leaders passed statements about Israel’s destruction on multiple occasions & extended their support to various militant groups.
That’s why Iran’s nuclear program has been a source of tension and concern for the entire international community.
Iran claims that its nuclear activities are peaceful and driven by energy purposes, but the Western powers are sure that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapon.
This is the reason why Israel launched many covert operations & lobbied for major international sanctions imposed by the US against Iran.
But amidst all this, Russia is backing the Iranian Nuclear Program in order to counter the power & influence of the US over the Middle East.
Iran’s nuclear program will open up opportunities for Russia to
- invest in the construction of nuclear facilities,
- supply of nuclear tech, and
- investment in Iran’s energy sector.
3ļøāƒ£Ā Regional Conflicts:
Iran and Israel's involvement in regional conflicts like the Syrian civil war and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has worsened tensions and deepened their animosity.
Surely, both the superpowers are not gonna face each other in the battle-field directly, and would use these 2 nations as their proxies
— but they’ll also prevent the issue from further escalation as some major events are gonna take place this year itself like the US-election.
