Thread 1/8:
Wednesday’s news cycle was dominated by news from Mogadishu regarding the closure of the Ethiopian embassy in Hargeysa. 👇🏽
Despite the widespread dissemination of statements by the SL government through various international news outlets, it was disappointing to note the absence of those same comments in SL owned media outlets based in Hargeysa, with the exception Bulsho TV. 👇🏽
The majority, including news bloggers, chose to report solely on Mogadishu's side of the news, while neglecting to cover SL's counter statements.👇🏽
While the freedom of the press is guaranteed by the SL constitution, ethical standards dictate that all sides of a story should be presented objectively and fairly, unless one party declines the coverage. 👇🏽
It is evident that the SL government did not decline and SL media houses failed or ignored to reach out, choosing instead to cover only Mogadishu’s side of the story.
Alternatively, they could have referenced international media sources. However, none opted for this approach. 👇🏽
Simply put, apart from Bulsho TV, the rest fell very short of meeting the rigorous ethical standards expected of a free press.👇🏽
This issue raises serious concerns about the integrity of SL media with many citing their pay for play practices- which are against the ethos of a free press as the reason why they didn’t cover SL side of this story. 👇🏽
Such questionable practices seriously warrant a closer scrutiny & certain rules have to be implemented to protect the integrity of our constitutional rights to have a free and functioning democracy.
Media houses have to be held accountable to some sort of journalistic integrity.
