Atmospheric Research Testbed in Central India (ART-CI)
- It is an open-field, focused observational and analytical research programme
- Aim: It conducts ground-based observations of weather parameters like temperature, wind speeds, etc. and in-situ (on-site) observations of the transient synoptic systems
- Location: Silkheda, Sehore district, about 50 km northwest of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
- Funding: Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES)
- Purpose: Houses 25 high-end meteorological instruments to study cloud processes related to the monsoons over the Monsoon Core Zone (MCZ)

ART Facility Details
- Area: Spread over 100 acres
- Investment: Developed for Rs 125 crore
- Management: Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune
Phases:
- First Phase: Commenced remote sensing-based and in-situ measurements
- Second Phase: Plans to deploy radar wind profiler, balloon-bound radiosonde, and soil moisture and temperature measuring equipment

Importance of ART
- Agricultural Impact: 45% of India’s labour force is in agriculture, mostly rain-fed, especially in the MCZ
- Monsoon Significance: Southwest monsoon brings 70% of the annual average rainfall, critical for Kharif cultivation
- Rainfall Patterns: Average monthly rainfall during July and August is 280.4mm and 254.9mm, respectively
- Synoptic Systems: Low pressures or depressions from the Bay of Bengal move westwards/northwestwards across the MCZ, delivering significant rainfall
