TACTICS VISITED-MAURIZIO SARRI
Banker turned coach, Maurizio Sarri captured eyeballs when his Napoli side played aesthetic yet effective football. Having won trophies at Juventus and Chelsea, Sarri moved to the capital City as a replacement for Simone Inzaghi and he has done a great job as seen with his Lazio's victory over Bayern yesterday.
With Milan effectively looking for a manager after Stefano Pioli's tenure here is why I feel we should look at Sarri.
Here is a 🧵 looking at his tactics
Sarri plays a 4-3-3 formation. The midfield 3 will consist of a Regista, and 2 mezzala's. The Regista is tasked with playing out from the back, and help verticalisation of play with forward passes as the Regista controls everything. The Goalkeeper and the CB's are expected to have good ball playing abilities as they need to build out from the back.
While constructing chances, Sarri likes his teams to overload between the opposition lines creating passing options.
Sarri's likes his LW to tuck inside while the RW stays wide to stretch the defense. The LW stays inside while the LB pushes up and with the Left side Mezzala, they interchange passes and try to reach the by line and cross or they pierce the opposition defense as we can see Ghoulam, Mertens and Hamsik doing for Napoli.
The RW as I mentioned would stay wide to ping on crosses or incase there is playing occuring on the left wing, would tuck inside and act as a second striker.
Incase his players are being marked with a man oriented press he would have his CB break the press by dribbling forward hence a ball playing CB like Kouilybaily and David Luiz finds space on his team
While he encourages fullbacks to push up, its usually a one up one down. One full back attacks while the other stays back to maintain the 3 at the back defensive shape
OUT OF POSSESSION
Sarri's team settled into a 4-5-1 or a 4-1-4-1 when not having the ball.
When not having the ball Sarri instructs his team to go into a counter-press and try to win the ball back up as high as possible up the pitch.
He instructs his players to cut off passing options by having his players adopt a position with a tactical advantage where they cover 2 options at once. While the Wingers cut off the FB's and their options the Mezzala's are placed behind them as backup.
Pressing traps are employed where they would block the center to push play out wide and then the player on the ball would be pressed with intensity.
However Sarri's teams play a very high line which make them sussecptible to counter-attacks.
OPINION
Sarri combines the 2 needs of football. Trophies and attractive style of play. His football is catered to a European need and not to the Italian game. With sacchi as his idol he always wanted to entertain the crowd but there are 3 questions to be answered before Sarri's appointment
- At the age of 65 does Sarri have it in him to manage another big and demanding club day in day out like A.C.Milan
- His style of play is extremely demanding and physically exhausting. Either he needs a deep squad or players should be extremely fit.
- The players need to have a deep level of understanding between then. Then and only then can Sarriball be in full flow
CONCLUSION
Sarri is a great coach and after yesterday's win over Bayern perhaps he's gained some lost eyeballs. A job like AC Milan will need a lot of patience and resolve and will not be an easy job.
