Welcome back to #JanuAirway Day 23. The Bleeding Airway – a nightmare situation every airway manager needs to be prepared for. Let’s start with a #OnePager – thanks to the legendary Barry McGuire for his expert help!

#JanuAirway Bleeding into the airway can be an emergency, Rx depends on a) the site of bleeding and b) the extent of physiological compromise. Three basic places blood can come from to enter the airway – above (e.g. nose), below (e.g. oesophagus) or from the airway itself.

#JanuAirway Don’t forget bleeding around the airway can also cause problems – a prime example is a post-thyroidectomy haematoma – luckily there are guidelines for that! Check out the DAS, BAETS and ENT-UK guidelines are #OnePagers 3/6
#JanuAirway Main Rx aims – Limit bleeding, proactive oxygenation and resuscitation. Mobilise the team early! When aiming to control the airway – be aware that blood may impair visualisation – have a PLAN! 4/6
Hope that helps. Come back tomorrow for more Airway #FOAMed. See you then! 6/6
