On the occasion of #RamMandir pratishtha, Patrick Olivelle argues that large #temples did not emerge in India till 5th century AD.
If so, how is it that #Chanakya’s #Arthashastra (3rd century BC) has so many verses indicating large temples?
1/7
In verse 2:4:15 #Chanakya says that #temple of the deity worshiped by the King should be constructed in the North part of the City, where Purohits reside.
2/7
At another place, #Chanakya says that Devasasis who have retired from temple service should be given employment by the King in knitting yarn.
We know that small temples don’t have nritya mandapam or devadasis.

Then #Chanakya explains how to settle boundary disputes related to highways, tapovan, sacred places, yagna sthal, #temples, etc. saying that the decisions of local chieftains in these matters should be treated as binding.
Clearly these are not small temples.

Then #Chanakya tells us that no one should be permitted to obstruct roads or occupy another person’s property by building a well, a chaitya or a #temple.
5/7
Finally, #Chanakya [with typical aplomb] tells secret service agents to kill an enemy by dropping a stone slab or other such item from a height when the enemy visits a #temple for worship.
This would be feasible only at a large structure.

So despite all this, and having translated Chanakya’s #Arthashastra himself, if Patrick Olivelle is unable to see these large temples in 3rd century BC, then there’s probably little we can do - except simply ignore him.
