🔹The Sleeping Disciples🔹
(An example of the problems in the gospel narratives | 🧵)
According to the gospels, before his arrest, Jesus went along with his disciples and ordered them to pray, he then went away from them and prayed to be saved by God. However when he came back he found them sleeping.
The Gospel of Mark highlighted the period of time it took Jesus to come back to them, and how he rebuked them.
Mark 14:37
He came and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake one hour?”
Interestingly the Gospel of Luke tried to present an explanation for their sleep, the author said they slept because of grief
Luke 22:45
“When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief”
However the validity of that explanation is questionable, grief doesn’t cause a person to sleep let alone a group of disciples, especially in such an intense moment. Luke’s author had his own agenda behind that explanation
This is noted by biblical scholars:
Some translations recognized that Luke’s explanation wasn’t convincing so they translate it as “exhausted from grief” they translate the word ἀπὸ as “exhausted from” however ἀπὸ only means ‘From/Because of’ without “exhausted” So the original text reads “Because of grief”
Christian theologians like John Calvin weren’t convinced with Luke’s explanation either. Calvin presented an alternative supernatural explanation, he suggested Satanic temptation as the cause for their sleep, which is not found in the text.
In conclusion:
▪️The gospel authors presented a narrative based on their agenda, which created many discrepancies.
▪️Luke’s proposed explanation wasn’t convincing, which made Christians present their own.
In contrast, we don’t see such mistakes in the Quran. In fact when the Muslims felt sudden drowsiness it was shown as a miracle from God to calm their hearts, as oppose to giving a false naturalistic explanation.
