What is Secularism?
Secularism is what is best defined as a philosophical movement which separates civil affairs & politics from religion.
Secularism's goal is to keep the government separate from mythological or religious laws, dogma, & other systems of beliefs.
The History of Secularism :
The word ''secularism'' became common in the English lexicon after George Jacob Holyoake, a secularist in England, used it to encourage rational thought over authoritarian and religious dogma during the 19th century.
Three Principles of Secularism :
1. Religion and religious institutions must be separated from the state & state institutions
2. Individuals within a society have the right to freedom of religion & thought.
3. State must treat all religions equally & without discrimination
The defining feature of secularism is its separation of religion & Government.
The principle, ''separation of Temple, mosque or masjid, church & state [ One can simply say Government]'' stands at the foundation of secularism.
Secularism in India & Pseudo-Secularism :
The term pseudo-secularism is used to describe individuals who claim to be secular but may display biases towards a particular religion, whether consciously or unconsciously.
Constituent Assembly Debate About Secularism:
Mainly 2 views of secularism immerged
Gandhi's view Sarva Dharma Sambhav i.e. equality for all religions
Nehru View followed the principle Dharma Nirpeksha i.e. religion should be a private matter and should not guide public life
Scraping Both Views Independent India adopted the following Concept
1. The State shall permit freedom of practicing any religion
2. The State shall not associate with any religion
3. The State shall honor all faiths of equality.
As far as the Indian scenario of secularism is concerned, a look into the records of the Constituent Assembly's debates reveals that the general understanding amongst members of the assembly was that India was to be a secular state.
Attempts to Add Socialist & Secularism to Indian Constitution
There were attempts which were made at least on three different occasions to introduce this term Secularism in the constitution but were rejected on all three occasions
Here, the wisdom & intelligence of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar must be appreciated because he was adamant about not inserting the words ‘Secular’ & ‘Socialist’ in the constitution
According to him inserting such a term could lead to turmoil in the political and public discourse.
After this No Attempts were Done to Insert Secularism & Socialist till 1976
During National Emergency Indira Gandhi Force Fully Inserted Socialist & Secular words to Preamble of Indian Constitution in 42nd constitutional amendment.
In this Amendment Indira Changed The Preamble of Indian Constitution from a "sovereign democratic republic" to a "sovereign, socialist secular democratic republic", and also changed the words "unity of the nation" to "unity and integrity of the nation".
The 42nd amendment, officially known as The Constitution Act, 1976, was enacted during the Emergency (25 June 1975 – 21 March 1977) by the Indian National Congress government headed by Indira Gandhi.
It's also Known As Mini constitution & Indira Constitution.
Since 42 Amendment No Govt or Political Leader Bothered or Shown Guts To Revoke It
Once can say India Became a Pseudo-secular country in 1950 itself When Article 25, 28, 30, 1951s HRCE Act are Implemented.
All Credit Goes to Nehru for Making in as Pseudo-secular Country
Father Congress Govt continued it's Pseudo-Secularism by Implemented Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowment Act in 1951
In 1956 Nehru brought Hindu Code Bill, But Never Toched Personal Law Board for Minorities
This Pseudo-Secularism is Still Alive in India Even today Also
Even Today In BJP & Modi's Regime This Pseudo-Secularism continues But Hindus are Blind
People think that BJP is Not a Secular Party But it's far from Truth
It Continued Nehru's & Congress Lagacy of Pseudo-Secularism by spending Rs-36330.03/- Crores for Minorities in Just 9 Yrs
If Present Govt is Hindu Pro or Secular Then Why Muslim Apprisement ?
Why Schems like Shadi Shagun, jiyo Parsi, Qaumi Waqf Board Taraqqiati,Shahari Waqf Sampatti Vikas Yojana?
