The Super League β€” Shortcomings, doubts & UEFA β€” [THREAD]
#JdPExplains
1/ Many will remember the original attempt during the pandemic. A closed system, with unclear structure. It seemed to be a sudden burst and outcry for help by most elite clubs in Europe against UEFA. Boris Johnson and other politicians got involved. Here we are, and it's back.
2/ Things have changed/The Format
It's important to note the biggest change β€”a self-proclaimed open league, with three leagues, with relegation and promotion systems. 16 teams in the first two each (two groups of 8 + KO) while the third proposes the remaining 32 participants.
3/ UCL/UEFA change
This year's UCL is the last as we know it in its current form. There'll be more games and a format change in UEFA's own affairs β€” if you want the current UCL, I'm afraid you're left with nothing but tears β€” it won't come back, no matter who's in charge.
4/ Elitism & resistance
Open or not, the problem and critics of ESL won't change β€” it will propose an elitist system, and it's yet unclear who the top 64 teams will be β€” and how they will be decided. That's a big problem for many non-elite teams in the current leagues at top.
5/ On finance
The biggest argument of ESL is the financial disparity that UEFA hasn't been able to manage (City, Chelsea & so forth). If it's self-regulated, how will it ensure the financial gains will be more or less equally distributed (they surely won't in diff leagues)
...
And some of the clubs that will have signed it are probably the targeted clubs. What happens if someone goes against the rules? Who rules it? The club themselves? A certain board? How will it be (s)elected? These are many questions that remain unanswered, that's a problem.
6/ Presentation
This is less serious, just a personal touch to all of this β€” which five year old designed the PPTX & names? Gold, blue, etc? Really. This is sadder than my own future, which is very sad to say. Nobody could come up with a better name all this time?
7/ Doubts on intent?
Depending on the financial point #5, there's quite a few doubts on whether this isn't just an elitist move to enrich the richest. It's pretty clear that lower clubs will probably not get too much money β€” essentially most likely dividing further the rich.
8/ Inflation?
The ESL comes with a promise with a lot of money for many clubs. Essential for clubs like Barça & RMA. But what happens? A natural inflation of the market, as if it wasn't enough already. With that influx of money, questions need to be raised about that.
9/ Broadcasting rights?
It's also unclear β€” who will be given TV rights, and does it mean a change in cost for the consumer β€” new channels? Does it mean that they could set the price as high as they want, as if the prices weren't already expensive enough?
10/ Improvement/critique
It's true that it indeed has improved from the original proposal, essentially more organized & clear. But it's far from over, depending on UEFA's reaction - many questions remain unanswered, and they're crucial to decide its support.
10bis/ not the fun of football
While it claims to open, it's much less open that the current UCL format. As such, there's a question on whether it's not just more closed β€” and makes it less fun. The whole fun is to discover new teams, not know who you're going to be paired with
This is a problem as what created the UCL great is that uncertainty, surprise factors. It's much less likely to happen here, though it all depends on how the 64 are selected β€” for the claim to be merit-based, which isn't a very detailed explanation. Time will tell!
