[1]
Aragorn II, son of Arathorn II, was the 16th & Last Chieftain of Dúnedain & the 1st King of the Reunited Kingdom. The Chieftains of Dúnedain were the exiled Nobility of the Royal House of Arthedain, Arthedain being a successor state of Kingdom of Arnor.
[2]
Aranarth, 1st Chieftain of Dúnedain was the son of Arvedui, last king of Arthedain, & Princess Firiel of Gondor. The claim for the crown of Gondor to be inherited by Arvedui was refused by the Gondorian Council after father of princess Firiel, King Ondoher passed away
[3]
After the death of Arvedui, Aranarth refused to take the title of King of Arthedain & instead took the title of Chieftain of Dúnedain. In Gondor too the line of Kings died out after Eärnur took the road to Minas Morgul. Thus the claim for both the realms of Arnor & Gondor
[4]
came to the Chieftains of Dúnedain. The remnant of the Northern Nobility came to be known as Rangers for common folk. The Rangers of the North tasked themselves with guarding the borders of the realm of Arnor & protecting the Free Peoples of Middle-earth from various threats
[5]
The Chieftains of the Dúnedain were hereditary leaders of this group & played a crucial role in maintaining the defence of the northern regions. Aragorn was born in 2931 to Arathorn II who was the 15th Chieftain of Dúnedain. Aragorn was a direct maleline descendant of Elendil
[6]
In TA 2933 Arathorn II, met his end in an orc ambush in the hills of the Emyn Muil. Aragorn who was only 2 years old at the time of his fathers death was brought to Rivendell & there he was fostered by Lord Elrond.
[7]
When Aragorn was 21 years old, Elrond revealed to him his true identity & his high lineage. He also gave to Aragorn the heirlooms of House of Isildur-the Shards of Narsil & the Ring of Barahir. The very next day Aragorn would meet Arwen and immediately fall in love with her.
[8]
In 2956 Aragorn met Wizard Gandalf & thus began their long friendship. A year later Aragorn under the disguise of Thorongil entered into the service of King Thengel of Rohan. It remains unclear until when Aragorn served under King Thengel.
[9]
After serving in with the Rohirrim, he left for Gondor whereby he entered into the service of Ecthelion II, Ruling Steward of Gondor. In TA 2980 After taking leave of Steward Ecthelion II, Aragorn sails to Umbar with a small fleet & kills the Captain of the Haven.
[10]
After this success, Aragorn left his fleet & travelled South & East to learn about the plotsof Sauron. After his long travels Aragorn returned to Lothlórien where he met Arwen. Here they renewed their love for each other & agreed to marry.
[11]
But Elrond keeps the condition that to marry Arwen, Aragorn must first become King of Arnor & Gondor. (Similar to how Thingol asked for a Silmaril in exchange for the hand of Lúthien.)
[12]
After Bilbo’s farewell party in TA 3001, Gandalf calls upon Aragorn and seeks his aid in finding Gollum. Gandalf suspects that the Ring which Bilbo possesses is the One Ring. Aragorn was 70 years old by this time.
[13]
6 years later Aragorn returned to North where he met his mother for one last time. Gilraen would soon die after the departure of Aragorn into the wild. Two years later Aragorn & Gandalf renewed their hunt for Gollum.Little did they know that Gollum was in captivity of Sauron
[14]
After 8 years in captivity, Gollum was released by Sauron in T.A. 3017. Aragorn captured Gollum in the dead marshes and took him to Lothlórien and later to King Thranduil. Aragorn later met Gandalf at Sarn Ford & learnt about the plans of Frodo to leave Shire.
[15]
The next year Aragorn learns from Gildor that the Nazgûl had been sighted & that Gandalf had been missing. Thus Aragorn & the Rangers doubled their watch over the Shire waiting for Frodo. He would come across Frodo & his companions at Prancing Pony in Bree in late September
[16]
Aragorn led the four Hobbits towards Weathertop where Frodo was injured in the ambush by the Nazgûl. Joined by Glorfindel, the company arrived at Rivendell in late October. After Frodo was healed, the Council of Elrond was called upon.
[17]
It was decided that the One Ring must be destroyed in Mount Doom. The Fellowship was chosen of which Aragorn was also a member. The shards of Narsil were reforged & the sword was renamed as Andúril. In late December the Fellowship left for their quest from Rivendell.
[18]
In the beginning of 3019, The Fellowship decided to cross the Misty Mountains through Moria after initially failing to cross it trough Caradhras. Soon Gandalf falls from the Bridge of Khazad-dûm & thus Aragorn becomes the leader of the Fellowship.
[19]
He led the Fellowship to Lothlórien & later to Falls of Rauros on the West bank of River Anduin. Here the fellowship breaks as Frodo departs the company by taking the eastern road to Mordor whereas Boromir is killed & Merry & Pippin are taken away by the Orcs
[20]
After the Funeral of Boromir, Aragorn led Gimli & Legolas across the plains of Rohan to seek for Merry & Pippin. In doing so the trio come across Éomer who lets them know that the Orc company was completely wiped and they did not come across any Hobbits.
[21]
Aragorn along with Gandalf, Legolas & Gimli rides to Edoras where Gandalf heals King Théoden. Aragorn joins the Rohirrim in the Battle of Hornburg. Following the defeat of Saruman’s army, Aragorn journeys to Isengard with King Théoden & Gandalf where they parley with Saruman
[22]
Later Aragorn uses the Orthanc-stone to reveal himself to Sauron. Soon Aragorn is joined by the Grey Company with whom he takes the Paths of the Dead. After summoning the dead men, they ride out to Pelargir and utterly rout the armies of Corsairs of Umbar.
[23]
Here Aragorn released the dead men of their oaths and then journeyed to Gondor in the black ships along with the Grey Company where he aided the armies of Gondor in defeating Gothmog’s forces.
[24]
Aragorn refused from taking the title of King as Sauron still was not defeated. He meanwhile appointed Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth as the acting Steward of the City as Denethor was dead & Faramir lay wounded. Aragorn later entered Minas Tirith to heal Faramir, Éowyn & Merry
[25]
In the Last Debate, it was decided that the majority of the standing armies of the free men should march to Mordor so as to draw Sauron’s armies out and help Frodo & Sam fulfil the quest of destroying the One Ring.
[26]
Following the destruction of the One Ring and the defeat of Sauron, a camp was set up at the Field of Cormallen where Aragorn healed Frodo & Sam. About a month after the defeat of Sauron, on 1st May, Aragorn II reached Minas Tirith & was crowned as the King.
[27]
King Elessar made Faramir as the stewards to his house and also gave him the lands of Ithilien & the title of Prince of Ithilien. Gandalf took the newly crowned King to Mount Mindolluin where he showed the King a sapling of the White Tree from the line of Nimloth.
[28]
King Elessar took this sapling and planted it in the court of his citadel. On Mid-year’s Day of the same year, King Elessar married Arwen. Elrond also returned the Sceptre of Annúminas to the heir of Isildur indicating his kingship of Arnor as well.
[29]
A month later King Elessar journeyed to Rohan along with the funeral escort of King Théoden & took part in the funeral. He then took leave of King Éomer and travelled to Isengard where the members of fellowship each went on their own way.
[30]
Here Aragorn gave the lands of Isengard to the Ents & also ordered the restoration of Orthanc & the Orthanc-stone. He then journeyed back to Minas Tirith. Two years later in TA 3021, Frodo along with Gandalf, Elrond, Galadriel & many other Elves departed to the blessed realm
[31]
In the first year of fourth age, Arwen gave birth to Prince Eldarion, heir to the realms of Arnor & Gondor.
In Year 06 of Fourth Age - King Elessar issued an edict that Men cannot enter the Drúadan Forest & the Shire. Shire was made a protectorate of the Northern Kingdom.
[32]
In Year 13 of Fourth Age - King Elessar adds the Thain of the Shire, Master of Buckland & the Mayor of Michel Delving as the counsellors of his Northern Kingdom.
Two years later - King Elessar journeys to Arnor & stays in Annúminas for a while.
[33]
He later journeys to Brandywine Bridge where he met Sam, Pippin & Merry. Here Elanor daughter of Sam was made a maid of honour for Arwen. In Year 21 of Fourth Age - Samwise Gamgee, Rose Cotton & their daughter Elanor visit Minas Tirith to meet King Elessar & Arwen.
[34]
In Year 31 of Fo.A, King Elessar made the lands of the Westmarch as part of the Shire. Ten years later at the request of Mayor Samwise Gamgee, Thain Peregrin Took creates the position of Warden of Westmarch which was given to Fastred of Greenholm, son-in-law of Sam Gamgee.
[35]
In Year 61 of Fourth Age - Rose Cotton wife of Samwise Gamgee passes away, Sam journeys to Westmarch where he hands over the Red Book to his daughter. He later goes to the Grey Havens from where he sails to the blessed realm.
[36]
Two years later King Éomer calls upon his friend Meriadoc Brandybuck. Merry takes counsel with Pippin and they both resign from their positions, leaving behind the Thain-ship & the Master-ship to their sons.
[37]
They then journey to Rohan where they stay in the company of King Éomer until his death. Following the death of King Éomer, Merry & Pippin journey to Gondor & spend the rest of their days in the company of King Elessar.
[38]
About 20 years later Steward Faramir passes away. His son Elboron succeeds as the second Steward to King Elessar and also as the second Prince of Ithilien.
[39]
Feeling that his time has come, King Elessar goes to Rath Dínen and lays down his body in year 120 of Fourth age. He bode farewell to Arwen and handed over the Kingship to his son. The bodies of Merry and Pippin were laid to rest beside King Elessar.
[40]
Eldarion succeeded as the second king of the Reunited Kingdom.
After the death of King Elessar, Legolas built a ship in Ithilien & departed to the blessed realm along with his long time friend – Gimli.
[41]
A year later Arwen journeyed to Lothlórien & here she gave up her life at Cerin Amroth, the very place where she had met Aragorn nearly two centuries ago.
[42]
