1. IPCC (since 1988 by WMO & UNEP)
• Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
• UN body to assess science related to climate change
• Prepares various reports & methodology on climate change
2. Glasgow Pact (at CoP26)
• Resolved deadlock on carbon markets
• Calls for phase down of coal & fossils
• First ever explicit mention of coal
3. Kyoto Protocol (1997)
• Int'l treaty obligating rich countries to cut GHGs
• Stayed in effect from 2005 to 2020
• Replaced by Paris Agreement
4. Carbon Markets
• Trading systems to buy and sell Carbon Credits
• GHG reductions help organizations & govt earn these credits
• 1 Credit = 1 ton of CO2
Once used, the credit becomes offset and thus, untradable
5. Geo-engineering
• Intervention in earth's natural systems to tackle climate change
• Debate on effectiveness & side effects is still on!
6. Paris Agreement
• Follows Kyoto protocol
• Adopted at CoP21; legally binding
• Aim: Limit rising global mean temperature
7. Conference of Parties (CoP)
• Int'l meeting organized annually by UN
• Parties are 198 countries party to UNFCCC
• All 'parties' have pledged voluntary actions to prevent:
“dangerous anthropogenic [human-caused] interference with the climate system.”
8. Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS)
• Process capturing CO2 to trap it beneath earth
• Aim: prevent escape of CO2 in atmosphere
• Used at factories & fossil plants
Note: CCS and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) are different. Latter is about sucking out carbon from atmosphere
9. National Adaptation Plans (NAPs)
• helps national develop plans to respond to climate change's present & future impacts
• Aim: reduce vulnerability to severe effects of climate change
• Strengthens adaptive capacity & resilience
10. Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)
• Mandated by Paris Agreement
• Countries to prepare outline for their efforts to reduce national emissions
• Such commitments are NDCs, submitted every 5 years
Note: successive NDCs are to be more ambitious than previous ones
