Despite Newcastle's aggressive press, Chelsea were able to bypass it a couple of times with their usual 4-2-2-2 shape.
Finding Palmer/Gallagher/Jackson between the lines.
In deeper areas, Newcastle transitioned into 4-5-1 to minimize the central progression. Chelsea tried to find the gaps by attracting the press and succeded to progress from wide.
This resulted in their 1st chance of the game (Gallagher).
Newcastle also tried to exploit wide areas with overloads/combinations against Chelsea’s narrow 4-2-3-1 shape, especially on the right side with Trippier – Almiron combo.
Attacking with crosses.
To help Cucurella – Sterling on the LHS, Badiashile/Ugochukwu/Enzo drifted wide to prevent Newcastle’s combinations.
In Newcastle’s 1st goal, Ugochukwu drifted wide to help Cucurella – Sterling on the LHS.
He was dragged deep but no one covered for him in central areas, this made Chelsea didn’t have much protection in front of the backline.
Lewis Miley could find Isak with ease.
After the goal, Pochettino switched Palmer and Gallagher.
Palmer (AM) to be positioned in more central areas to connect the play, while Gallagher (RW) to help with the duels and wide overloads.
Ugochukwu often dropped as the extra CB in the build-up, this gave more space for Palmer to receive and turn (less congested areas).
It was another beautiful build-up from Chelsea, resulting in a chance for Enzo.
We’ve seen Enzo drifting to the left against Arsenal and Man City. In this game, there was an example where Enzo drifted to the right, and this helped Reece James to be more advanced.
Also created a passing lane to Palmer.
I think Chelsea wanted to isolate Sterling for the 1v1 Trippier. But with the support from the likes of Almiron/Miley/Bruno, Sterling struggled to create from there.
#CFC were growing into the game, but they were killed by two quick #NUFC goals.
#NUFC's decision to play short from FK, disrupted #CFC's marking.
Enzo – Badiashile defended the same players, while Cucurella underloaded. This resulted in Lascelles getting a free header.
Thiago Silva’s error a minute later, and Reecee James’ red card made it a lot worse for Chelsea.
