When did Jainism Originate?
- It came to prominence in the 6th century B.C.
- There were 24 great teachers, the last of whom was Lord Mahavira.
Note: Teachers in Jainism were called Tirthankaras
Why?
They were people who had attained all knowledge (Moksha) while living & preached it to the people

What are the Tenets of Jainism?
- Mainly aims at the attainment of liberation
- It can be attained through 3 principles called Three Jewels or Triratna i.e.
- Right Faith (Samyak Darshan)
- Right Knowledge (Samyak Jnana)
- Right Action (Samyak Charitra)
What are the important doctrines of Jainism?
5 Doctrines of Jainism:
- Asteya: Do not steal
- Satya: Do not speak a lie
- Ahimsa: Non-injury to living being
- Brahmacharya: Observe continence
- Aparigraha: Do not acquire property
Important sects of Jainism
1. Digambara
- Believe women cannot achieve liberation
- Monks of this sect believe in complete nudity
- Follow ALL 5 vows (Satya, Ahimsa, Asteya, Aparigraha & Brahmacharya)
- Male monks do not wear clothes while female monks wear unstitched plain white sarees
Bhadrabahu was an exponent of this sect
2. Svetambara
- Monks wear white clothes
- Believe women can achieve liberation
- Follow only 4 vows (except brahmacharya)
Sthulabhadra was an exponent of this sect
