Cutbacks are a powerful attacking tool in football.
They can be used to create space, beat defenders, and create chances to score goals.
I am going to speak about their effectiveness and how they can be defended.

First, what a 'CUTBACK'?
A cutback is a move where a player dribbles down the wing and then cuts inside towards the goal, either to shoot themselves or to cross to a teammate.
Forexample this recent goal of Haaland against United where Silva makes a cutback to him.

According to Footballytics, there wereย 56 goals scored from cutbacksย in the 2022-23 Premier League season. This represents a 13% increase from the previous season.
Let's see how....
Cutbacks are often used in combination with other attacking moves, such as overlapping fullbacks/number #8s and underlapping forwards.
Like Bernado Silva does in the clip above.
This can create a lot of confusion for defenders and leave them outnumbered in the box.

One of the main advantages of cutbacks is that they are difficult to defend against.
When a player is dribbling down the wing, defenders have to decide whether to stay with them or drop off. If they stay with the player, the player can cut inside and beat them.

Cutbacks can be used in a variety of ways.
Players can cut inside to shoot, cross, or pass to a teammate.
They can also use cutbacks to create space for themselves or their teammates.
Szoboszlai below makes the cutback for Nรบnรฉz.

Cutbacks are especially effective when used in combination with other attacking moves. For example, a player might cut inside and overlap with a teammate, or they might cut inside and create a passing angle for a teammate.
Just like the clip above.

Most of the best players in the game are cutback , they use cutbacks to great effect.
They are able to beat defenders with their pace, skill, and dribbling ability, and they are also very good at finding space in the box.

All teams would love to use this tool in attacking but why isn't it for everyone but the best?
Chart below shows the shows teams who created highest xG from cutbacks last season 22-23.
Can you see the pattern?

If you and you have seen that the some of the best teams are the ones leading, here is why;-
1. Possession is Key.
Possession is often the name of the game.
Teams use cutbacks to keep the ball and probe the opponent's defense.

2. Midfield Maestros.
Midfielders are often the architects of tactical cutbacks. Their ability to read the game, distribute the ball, and make quick decisions is essential. Think of Xavi, Iniesta, Bernado Silva, Martnelli, KDB, Szoboszlai etc
3. Creating Space.
Cutbacks are about creating space.
When a player makes a backward pass, it forces defenders to adjust their positions. This can open up lanes for a through ball, a shot from distance, or a dangerous run into the box.
4. Patience is a Virtue.
Some of the best teams use cutbacks to be patient. They don't force the issue and wait for the right moment to strike. This controlled approach often leads to higher-quality chances and less risk of losing possession.
All that said but how can we defend that mayhem.
Defending Cutbacks, it requires discipline.
Defenders must track their opponents, stay compact, and be ready to pounce on any loose balls so the goalkeeper.
It's a mental game as much as a physical one.
