Very interesting thread, but Armin is wrong on one thing: not everyone got Hamas wrong. Only the people who wanted to believe that Hamas was better than they looked got them wrong.

Hamas controlled all the news & information out of Gaza. The local stringers & correspondents were often not just imbedded with Hamas, but part of Hamas. It filtered all information from the region with Hamas-colored glasses. x.com

Israel's worse attack wasn't a surprise. Everyone just hoped that if they ignored that Hamas was an existential threat to Israel, that it would moderate over the decades as it became entrenched in corruption & governing. Hamas simply weaponized both tools.
