People have claimed every now and then that Islam became the dominant religion in Indonesia and Malaysia chiefly due to its 'peaceful' teachings and due to the so called 'rigidity' of Hindu teachings.
However, this isn't not only grossly incorrect, but also a concocted propaganda. A thread on the rise of Islam in Indonesia & Malaysia➡
Indonesians and others didn't embrace Islam for its teachings. Despite the absence of foreign invaders, foreign Muslim traders gradually established their base, created small city states, and then waged violent Jihad on their neighbors to spread Islam.
[1/9]
This was akin to how the British became the rulers of India, except that the British were driven by wealth rather than ideology. Hence, contrary to popular claims, Islam 'colonized' Indonesia.

The local Muslim principalities, funded by the Muslim traders, constantly skirmished the area to convert the "local Kaffirs," but even after 4 centuries of presence in the region, until the 14th century, found sparse success in their religious endeavors.

However, their fortune altered with the conversion of an influential Hindu king by deceptive means. Parameswara, the Indic ruler of the Malay Peninsula (heartland of present-day Malaysia) was losing rapidly to the great Majapahit Empire of the present-day Indonesia.

In AD 1402., Parameswara fled to port-city of Malacca, where he found refuge among the Muslim merchants, who were quite influential in the court traders. Parameswara also became hugely dependent on them to recruit Muslims in his army en-masse and funding.
[5/9]
But then came a decisive change which forever changed the fortune of Islam in the Southeast, and strengthened its routes. Parameswara fell in love with a Muslim slave-girl. To gain her hand in marriage and to attain an heir, Parameswara converted to Islam.
[6/9]
Do you think that Parameswara's subjects accepted Islam for its teachings? Don't be naive. The answer is an absolute NO! After converting to Islam, Parameswara became an orthodox Muslim. He adopted the name of 'Sultan Iskandar Shah' and launched mass-scale conversions.
[7/9]
Soon, the new 'Sultanate of Malacca' became the hotspot of radicalism and started waging Jihad. It engulfed the entire Malay peninsula, parts of Sumatra, Java and spreaded till the Philippines by the early 1500s. And that's how Malaysia and Indonesia converted to Islam!
