Metallic Minerals
1.Iron
-India stands 1st in iron ore reserves in Asia
a) Magnetite: The best quality iron ore containing 72% of pure Iron.
b) Haematite: Contains 60-70% of pure Iron
c) Limonite: Contains 40-60% of pure Iron
d) Siderite: Contains less than 40% of pure Iron
2.Manganese:
• Used for smelting Iron & making alloys
• India has the 2nd Largest manganese reserves after Zimbabwe
• India is the fifth-largest producer of Manganese in the world
• Manganese reserves in India are found in Odisha (44%), Karnataka (22%), Madhya Pradesh
(13%)
3.Copper:
• Used in electrical industry to manufacture wires, electrical pieces of equipment
•Copper production: Madhya Pradesh (58%), Rajasthan (32%), Jharkhand(11%).
• Major copper mines are at Singhbhum (Jharkhand), Malanjkhand (MP), Khetri-Singhania and Alwar (Rajasthan)
4.Bauxite:
• It is the ore of Aluminium
• Major producers: Kalahandi & Koraput belt of Odisha (36%), Gujarat (20%) Maharashtra (13%)
• NALCO, BALCO and HINDALCO are major companies engaged in the mining of Bauxite in
the country.
5. Gold:
• India’s share in the world's gold production is less than 1%
• Karnataka is the leading producer of gold accounting for 99% of total production
• Major goldfields in India: Kolar (Karnataka), Hutti (Karnataka), Ramgiri (Andhra Pradesh)
6. Mica:
• Insulating properties used in the electrical and electronics industry.
• It can withstand high voltage and has a low power loss factor.
• India contributes about 60% of the world’s total production
• Andhra Pradesh is the largest mica producing state of India
7. Limestone:
• It used in the cement industry, iron and steel industry, used in paper, sugar, fertilizers, glass, rubber etc
• Over 3/4 of the total limestone production is from six states, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu
8. Asbestos:
• Asbestos denotes two different minerals, Ampibole & Chrysotile
• Chrysotile accounts for 80% of asbestos of commercial use
• Andhra Pradesh is the largest producer of Asbestos in India
9. Dolomite:
• Limestone with more than 10% Magnesium is called Dolomite
• Dolomite is used in the Iron and Steel industry Fertilizer, Glass etc
• Chhattisgarh is the leading producer of Dolomite (28%), followed by Andhra Pradesh (23%)
10. Gypsum:
• Mainly used in making Ammonia sulphate fertilizer and in the cement industry.
• The bulk of production of Gypsum comes from Rajasthan (99%) and the remaining 1% fromJammu and Kashmir and Gujarat
