FARMING LESSON:
STAKING (Definition, Examples of crops that can be staked, Staking materials and Importance of staking):
a). DEFINITION:
Staking is the act of providing support to the plants by using stakes.
THREAD: 1/8. (In this thread, we shall discuss Staking in details).
b). EXAMPLES OF CROPS THAT CAN BE STAKED:
1. Climbing beans.
2. Tomatoes.
3. Banana plants.
4. Fruit trees such as apples, ovacadoes, mangoes, passion fruits, among others.
2/8.
c). STAKING MATERIALS:
1. Wood
2. Bamboo
3. Plastic
4. Metals rebars
5. etc.
3/8.
d). IMPORTANCE OF STAKING:
1. Staking gives the plant the ability to grow without bending or breaking. This allows the plant to get the necessary sunlight it needs to continue growing.
2. It‘s much easier to spot a disease or pest outbreak when the plants are staked.
4/8.
3. It imroves aeration which reduces the influence of pests and diseases compared to the bush crops, for example; in beans.
4. Provides support to ensure clean and unblemished fruits by keeping fruits off the ground, thereby increasing marketable yield, eg; in tomatoes.
5/8.
5. Staking eases harvesting by allowing easy movements in crop rows. It also prevents injuring the plants during harvesting, eg; in tomatoes.
6. Staking eases field practices such as weeding, spraying and irrigation, since it allows the easy movement in the crop field.
6/8.
7. Staking increases the production capacity of the plant, in that, the productive part of the crop is clearly exposed to sunlight and hence many flowers and fruits are produced, eg; in beans.
8. etc.
