β€”City Setupβ€” build up issues.

β€”Life without Ruben Dias.

16th August 2023β€”Manchester City take on Sevilla in their first visit to the competition.
The stage is set in Athens, Greece for the UEFA Super Cup. A win for Manchester City gives them their first Super Cup in the clubs history.
An important game for City to create even more…
Despite being clear favourites for the fixture, the performance was very off colour.
Now it must be said, City were without key team figures: Notably Ruben Dias, John Stones and ill stricken Bernardo Silva.
This was largely reason City struggled, specifically in build up. Let’s…
Well firstly, City setup in their trademark 3-2-2-3 (3-box-3) system.
As seen by the image, Manuel Akanji is seen taking up the β€˜Stones role’ through inversions into a midfield pivot with Rodri.
Manuel Akanji gradually improved through the match after initial struggles in the 1st half (typically in build up situations).
But this was understandable due to little practice or experience in an inverted roleβ€”Akanji was due to initially struggle.
Add to this, the imbalance…
But these weren’t the only factors that contributed to City’s poor build up.
In the early stages of the game, Sevilla deployed a lob-sided 4-2-3-1 with a high press.
Sevilla let Ederson have the ball but set pressing traps. Notably, the ball out to Ake/Walkerβ€” signalled Sevilla…
Despite this press working, it was sometimes disjointed from Sevilla.
Over aggression and jumping out too much sometimes led to this high press being played through.
3rd man combinations were commonβ€”notably Foden who dropped to combine and help progress the ball.
Another way City played through the high press is with cross field passes/switches of play.
This is because of the lob-sidedness of the Sevilla press.
The Sevilla pivot (after being on one side of the pitch) couldn’t recover in time to cope with the switch.
Both of the pivot…
However a Sevilla high press didn’t happen throughout the whole match, not even the whole 1st half.
Sevilla’s behaviour changed, notably after they took lead.
Sevilla shifted from a 4-2-3-1 high-lob sided press to a 4-4-2 mid block.
As previously mentioned, our #8s were…
This compactness in Sevilla’s shape meant space was now free in wider areas.
Previously during Sevilla’s use of a higher pressβ€”City wingers Palmer/Grealish were trapped.
Sevilla locked wider channels by using their full backs to press the City wingersβ€”forcing them to face…
This is what enabled Cole Palmer to have a β€˜masterclass’ performance.
Giving him greater freedom to isolate his full back 1vs1 enhanced his strengths.
In 1vs1 situations, his unpredictability and quick change of direction meant deceiving opposition defendersβ€”generating high…
In fact, City’s goal and lifeline into the game came from a wider area where Rodri (out of all people) created the goal.
Rodri became a primary creator in this game, getting into advanced areas where he can use his passing range to create chances.
His high level of precision in…
Out of possession, City started with their trademark 4-4-2.
However, one of the Sevilla pivots dropped deep to receive the ball whereas the other advanced.
This resulted in Kovacic following the deepest midfielder whereas Rodri stayed to mark the more advanced of the Sevilla…
The goal for example, came by Rodri not covering the space in between the lines correctly.
A freak pass through the centre of the pitch highlighted this mistake as Rodri/Kovacic could not recover the ground in time.
This left Kyle Walker 2vs1β€”numerical disadvantage.
A cross…
Let’s talk about Dias’s absence.
It was a big miss, has been for the beginning of the season.
A CCB needs temperament, composure, leadership and organisational skills in and out of possession.
That is why Ruben Dias is so essential to the team because nobody can replicate…
In the end though, a hard fought 90 minutes led to penalties. After scoring all 5 penalties and a missed penalty from Nemanja Gudelj meant City were Super Cup champions.
For the 1st time in their history, the trophy had entered the Man City cabinetβ€”extending Pep Guardiola’s Man…
