5 Words People Use Wrong All the Time (Including You):
1) Love
Most languages have 3-4 words for what, in English, is described with one. So we tend to overuse the word and diminish its meaning. Liking something isn’t love. Infatuation or romance isn’t love. A bunch of intense emotions is not love.
2) Happiness
Most people mistake pleasure for happiness when they’re not the same thing. Most people spend their lives chasing highs—emotional peaks—when true happiness is a quiet consistent satisfaction with one’s life.
3) Need
We overestimate what we need. We need to do well in school. We need to make our friends happy. We need to see a Netflix show. We don't *need* these things. Thousands have lived and done incredible things while failing to do most of the things we think we "need.”
4) Best
OMG, this is the best thread ever! Did you see my other threads? Of course you did, that’s why we’re besties! Everything is the best, all the time, everywhere! And that, boys and girls, is how we completely ruin the meaning of the word “best.”
5) Growth
Some people read or do things that make them temporarily feel better, then convince themselves it’s “growth.” But that good feeling goes away. So they need more “growth.” Growth happens when you improve upon bad feelings. Not good ones.
Now that I’ve told you what these five words *really* mean, I hope you’ll no longer misuse them like a doofus. Follow me @IAmMarkManson for more content that stops you looking a right fool, and retweet this thread to spread the words, literally.
