In 1902; Prof Washburn Hopkins/Yale Univ presented path breaking paper showing complex decimal mathematical operations in Mahabharata. This paper; while never refuted was ignored by "mainstream" & "5th AD theory of decimal invention" was pushed.Thread on his brilliant paper(1/4)
As per Prof Hopkins in Mahabharata:
- constant use of decads; triads; dyads; heptads; octet in actual numbers & also in deliberate word groupings indicating that permanent combtn of decimal nos was in daily use
- arrow discharge & military formations invlvng large nos(2
are formulaic indicating mathematical training in permutation & combination of troops & arrows at theoretical level
- use of divisions of 10 eg dashadaivatam; dasha homam and in progressive numbers based on 10 eg 30-60-90; etc reveal a society with regular use of decimal nos(3/4)
- egs of addition; multiplication; subtraction; division; relative comparison (><) and also formulae combining these in royal taxes; tributes; popln/village enumeration;armies;etc
- distinguishing end suffixes fr multiplication indicates a separate taxnmy fr maths vs words(contd
- use of high pwr decml nos nowhere else used in ancient world. Eg of 10^6
- many stock usages of numbers are also used in Vedas indicating continuity in mathematical terminology
- Use of decimal maths in Mahabharata is most complex advanced use of maths anywhere in ancient world
