Notion is hard to learn.
It took me 2 years to fully master it.
Here are 7 fundamental beginner tips to make the most of Notion:
1. Everything is blocks
- Everything in Notion is a block
- Headings, images, databases, they’re all blocks
- And to build a dashboard you simply put blocks on top of and next to each other
2. Keyboard shortcuts
- The blocks you’ll use most often are the basic blocks
- So learn their keyboard shortcuts to save time
- Here’s a link to all the Notion keyboard shortcuts:

3. Structure
- On your sidebar you’ll see your top-level pages
- Inside these pages you can have more pages within pages infinitely
- The pages on your sidebar should be dashboards that organize your docs & templates inside
- Avoid a cluttered sidebar at all costs
4. Use templates
- Starting from a blank page can be daunting
- So make use of Notion’s pre-made templates
- Or get templates from other Notion creators
- This will give you a good starting point to customize & personalize from

5. Basics of databases
- Each database entry is its own Notion page where you can include more content inside
- You can assign different properties to database entries and filter and sort them
- You can also use one of the 6 database views to display your information differently
6. Aesthetics
- Personalizing your Notion and playing around with the design is hella fun
