mosquitos like to lay eggs in stale water. that's why you put dirt and grass in the bucketsโto produce "old water" chemical reactions for them to sense. they like stale water because it's likely to remain, which means their eggs can hatch

that mosquito "dunk" contains a harmless-to-humans bacteria that kills eggs once laid
as long as you have no other sources of stagnant water on your property (first address that), they have nowhere else to bread but in your buckets

if you put buckets around your property, it means the mosquitos near you will use it and die out. but mosquitos from elsewhere don't tend to aggressively migrate *into* your property. (assuming your property isn't super tiny, that is.)
because, again, they stay in a local area

make sure you put the buckets in the shade so the sun doesn't evaporate the water. replace dunks monthly.
the larger your property, the more buckets you'll want.
