Virat Kohli made ₹240 Cr in 2021 from endorsements alone🤯
This is the amount at which an entire IPL team's rights were bought in 2008😲
BCCI is going to make ₹50,000 Cr+ just from IPL during 2023-2027📈
What makes IPL one of world's biggest sporting league? 🤔A thread🧵👇
Main players in the IPL Business Model Ecosystem
🔸BCCI: The organisers of IPL;
🔸Team Owners: Companies or rich people like SRK;
🔸Broadcasters: Viacom18, Star Network;
🔸Sponsors like Title sponsors etc.
Revenue streams for these players👇
[1] Broadcasting Rights
🔸Sold for ₹48,390.5 Cr for 5 seasons from 2023-27🤯
🔸Jump of 3x from 2018-22 rights amt & 11.8x from first 5 yrs📈
🔸Star sports has TV rights & Viacom 18 (Jio Cinema) has app rights
🔸Amt is divided b/w BCCI (50%) & all 10 IPL teams equally (50%)
[2] Franchise Rights
🔸When a new team is introduced in IPL, their franchisee rights are auctioned
🔸BCCI retains 100% of this
🔸Mumbai Indians' rights were the most expensive in 2008 at ₹486.9 Cr
🔸In 2021, Lucknow Super Giants got sold at ₹7,090 Cr. A 12x jump from 2008🤯
[3] Central Sponsors
🔸Tata purchased Title sponsors rights at ₹335 Cr p.a [Tata IPL 2023]
🔸PayTm is Umpire Sponsor. Their logo is on umpires' tshirts, caps
🔸Then there are others like Dream11, Cred etc.
🔸Estimated that centrals sponsorships will get ₹1,000 Cr+ this year
[4] Prize Money
🔸Prize money pool of ~₹46.5 Cr which is divided between Winner(₹20 Cr), runner up and other 2 play-off teams
🔸This is not a significant amt for the cost of franchisee rights purchased (₹7,090 Cr for LSG)
Then why do companies pay so much to get teams?👇
[5] It is the VALUATION GAME
🔸Rajasthan Royals franchise costed ₹290 Cr in 2008
🔸In 2021, 15% stake was sold at ₹1,860 Cr valuation netting ₹280 Cr
🔸Owners retained 85% & recovered initial invt (ignore inf & tax)
🔸Tiger Global now plans to invest at ₹5,382 Cr val.
Infact, in 2018 only, CSK’s share was trading at around ₹18-20 in the unlisted market
Now it trades at ~₹200🚀
Speaks a lot for the valuation increase due to increase in incremental revenue for teams arising from broadcasting rights majorly
[6] IPL Team Sponsors
🔸Different from IPL's central sponsors & 100% revenue goes to IPL teams
🔸Logos of sponsors are printed on players jerseys, kits etc
🔸Main principle sponsors of RCB are Qatar Airways. Others are Happilo etc.
🔸This forms 20-30% of a team's revenue

🔸Since broadcasters spent ₹48,390.5 Cr, what do they get in return?
🔸TV broadcasters sell each 10 seconds ad slot at ₹15-18 Lakhs🤯
🔸Estimated that they made ₹4,300 Cr from just selling ad space in 2022📈
🔸Then you pay for TV channels also
Contd..👇
🔸₹199-277 per 1,000 views are paid for ads on app
🔸50L to 1 Cr people view at a time. When Dhoni bats, it goes to 2 Cr🤯
🔸30.7 Cr ppl logged in to watch first 10 matches of IPL📈
🔸Calculate how much Jio Cinema would've made😌
🔸Now they are coming with subscriptions also
If you were to earn ₹50,000 Cr., you first thought would have been
"Damn! So much to shell out in taxes!"
A common man earning that much will have to pay 39% tax in the NEW Tax Regime!
How much does BCCI have to pay? 30% or 25% or 17%? Tell me your guesses👇
With the kind of crazy monetization we see for every player in this ecosystem, I made a SHER
“Cricket is the biggest religion in India and IPL is the biggest festival we Indians celebrate.”
