Most people suck at writing.
But if you avoid these 10 common mistakes, I guarantee you won't:
🧵
❌ Not varying sentence length
You don't see what you read.
You hear it.
If every sentence is the same length, it gets boring. Fast.
Instead:
Aim for 20% long and 80% short.
Make your sentences sing.
❌ Not following the Rule of One
If you try to please everyone, you please no one.
If you try to say everything, you say nothing.
Instead:
· One big idea
· One captivating story
· One core emotion
· One core benefit
· One call to action
Specificity is the secret.
❌ Using adverbs
Most people think adverbs strengthen your message.
But they ruin it.
Use them as an opportunity to swap out for bigger & bolder language.
Like Stephen King once said,
"The road to hell is paved with adverbs."
❌ Using passive voice
Passive voice is wordy and confusing. It makes your reader feel uncertain. And trust me:
Uncertainty is a killer.
If passive voice is the problem, then zombies are the solution.
❌ No process
Most people don't suck at writing.
They suck at systems.
· Don't write and edit simultaneously
· Leave time between your drafts
· Schedule content 1 week ahead
Use my 'Triple Tap Writing System':
❌ Too clever, not clear
Schools teach you that the smarter you sound, the better you are.
The internet shows you the opposite.
The secret is to distil core ideas down to their simplest form.
Clarity is king.
❌ Poor formatting
Before people read, they assess:
"Will this be worth my time?"
Even the best ideas are ruined by poor presentation.
Instead, optimize for skimmability.
❌ Too long
Like it or not, the internet's a battle for attention.
You're not just competing with creators, but companies like TikTok.
You can't afford to waffle.
Instead, use the 33% rule:
Cut 1/3rd from your draft before publishing.
People are busy. Write like it.
❌ Hedging your bets
Weak writing, weak results.
Your audience wants a bold point of view.
They want to trust you have the solution.
So if you want them to care about your ideas, make sure they hit home.
❌ Being the guru
The internet is full of experts without experience.
Everyone is telling everyone else what to do.
The best way to stand out?
Do the opposite. Zig instead of zag. Show instead of tell.
Much less 'How To's'
Much more 'How I's'
