Thread: Why The Intellectually-Curious Will Dominate The 2020's
๐Ÿงต
One of my favorite parts of The Lord Of The Rings is where Gandalf goes to Minas Tirith to search the depths of its archives for information on the Ring Of Power...
1/x
He ultimately finds a lost account of the one ring, written in Isildur's own hand, long forgotten by the latter day men of Gondor...
For, despite having this vast trove of ancient books and manuscripts, no one in the city has delved through them for hundreds of years...
2/x
They are still a noble and courageous people, but are "diminished", and would be incapable of building the civilization they have inherited.
Much of their own learning has been lost, but for the curious their city contains an almost limitless amount of knowledge and wisdom.
3/x
This reminds me very much of the world we find ourselves in today.
For the internet- and now AI- have given rise to a situation where there is greater access to information than at any time in world history.
4/x
Literally anyone with an internet connection can read any book ever written, learn any language, interact on Twitter with the smartest individuals on earth, watch videos on YouTube explaining any concept, etc.
5/x
Yet the vast majority of the population sadly exists as slaves to the cheapest dopamine the internet can provide... mindless mobile video games without any significant artistic merit, pointless doomscrolling partisan political fights, p0rn, OF, etc.
6/x
However, for the small segment of the population who are intellectually curious, the internet is as the archives of Minas Tirith were to Gandalf... and is utterly transformational in every regard...
7/x
You have tens of millions of people supporting themselves through freelancing and independent online work.
You have Filipinos and Nigerians creating online businesses on equal footing with Americans.
8/x
You have teenagers becoming Solidity/coding wizards and making massive fortunes before their 18th birthdays.
Completely anonymous individuals amassing 8 figure net worths from scratch in Metam*sk wallets.
9/x
You have a renaissance of self-taught musicians and writers and artists.
Not to mention the incipient wonders being created through AI.
10/x
The common demoninator in all these things though, is that they come from the tiny sliver of society that is intensely curious.
Because if technology is progressing at the speed of light, only the most passionate + curious can keep up with it.
11/x
Old methods of learning become anachronistic.
A 4 year degree in marketing is worthless because marketing evolves at warp speed along with the internet.
A Harvard diploma loses its symbolic value when the smartest young people increasingly choose to forego college.
12/x
As @balajis says, "the internet increases variance", and this dichotomy between those are innately curious and those who are not will continue to define more and more spheres of life.
13/x
We see this very vividly when it comes to health.
Those who follow the societally prescribed path- even with great diligence- end up intensely unhealthy, due to industrial processed food, the overprescribing of medication, lack of sunlight, etc.
14/x
Meanwhile a tiny minority of the population delves deeply into the topic of fitness and nutrition, often via 'broscience' and esoterica, and is able to buck the system and become healthy.
15/x
All of the above is why the intellectually curious will massively over-benefit this decade.
Indeed, everyone I know really killing it today is a classic example of the 'serial obsessive', continually geeking out and diving down rabbit hole after rabbit hole all their life.
17/x
We today- especially in the West- are the 'lesser sons of greater sires', as Theoden would say.
But we have greater access to knowledge, wisdom, information, and tools than ever before in human history- *if* we have the passion to utilize them.
18/x
Conclusion:
Those with limitless curiosity- especially if coupled with drive and self-discipline- are uniquely situated to thrive in the time ahead of us.
Lots of blackpills in the world today, but boundless opportunity as well.
