🔹The meaning of Arīsiyīn🔹
▪️The meaning of the word Arīsiyīn(الأريسيين) in the letter of the prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Heraclius.
He’s arguing that the prophet ﷺ referenced Arians(a Christian sect) in his letter to Heraclius(Sahih Bukhari 7). This claim can be falsified in many ways, but I’d like to keep it short by analyzing:
1️⃣ The meaning of “Arīsiyīn”
2️⃣ The meaning of the Hadith
1️⃣ The meaning of Arīsiyīn
Arīsiyīn is the plural of أريس which means a farmer/peasant in Arabic, that’s why many scholars interpreted it as farmers/peasants. In fact the word أريس also means a farmer in other Semitic languages such as Aramaic
Ibn Hajjar proved this meaning, and he pointed out the earliest understanding of Arīsiyīn, by appealing to other narrations of the same incident where the narrators used synonyms words to express the same meaning. Words such as:
الأكارين = Farmers
&
الفلاحين = Farmers
2️⃣ The meaning of the Hadith
The prophet ﷺ told Heraclius to accept Islam, or else he will be responsible for the sins of those who are ruled by him, symbolized by the poor illiterate farmers/peasants who look up to their leader for guidance and have no option but to obey him.
This meaning is also corroborated by other letters attributed to the prophet ﷺ where the same terms were mentioned to other leaders. The leaders were invited to accept Islam or else they will be responsible for the sins of those who are ruled by them.
Our friend then tried to use this false interpretation as an argument against Islam by connecting it to what John of Damascus said. Check out this refutation of John’s best arguments against Islam

This is a sample of John’s ignorance on Islam👇🏼
