First batch of the Egyptian military personnel who were in Sudan returned back to Cairo today.
BREAKING: The 27 Egyptian soldiers who were captured by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) at Merowe airport have been handed over to the Egyptian Embassy in Khartoum, in preparation for their evacuation to Egypt — Official Statement.
Egypt's military spokesman also confirmed that most of the Egyptian troops stationed in Sudan were evacuated since yesterday via three military transport planes that landed in coordination with the Sudanese parties.
Efforts to ensure the safety and security of the Egyptian soldiers apprehended by the #RSF were carried out in coordination and cooperation with the UAE — Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Worth noting that Egypt evacuated around 177 of its military personnel stationed in Sudan yesterday via three military transport planes landed at Dongola airport.
This operation was carried out by Egyptian military in cooperation with the Egyptian General Intelligence Service.
The Egyptian troops that evacuated yesterday weren't in the custody of the RSF as they couldn't reach them, and they managed to move away from the combat zone in Merowe when clashes broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Egyptian SOF were deployed later yesterday to accompany these troops and secure a safe passage through a land route to Dongola airport, about 167km far from Merowe
Dongola airport was re-operated especially for the evacuation operation carried out by Egyptian military aircrafts.
The evacuation operation was carried out by the Egyptian military in cooperation with the General Intelligence Service.
The Special Task Force leading this operation was composed of members of the Egyptian army SOF and General Intelligence Service (GIS) Special Force.
Why then a 27 military personnel were captured..?
The troops evacuated yesterday were deployed in an area adjacent to Merowe airport/airbase where the RSF couldn't reach them while the remaining 27 military personnel were stationed inside the airport when clashes broke out.
The Egyptian troops deployed in Sudan were part of a joint military drills scheduled for May, as they were on a training mission not a combat one, in which they weren't authorized to involve in any combat actions or even fire a bullet when the RSF was attacking Merowe airport.
