1/ This week we learned that Germany will pull the plug on its last three nuclear power stations by the weekend.
The phase-out was originally planned for the end of 2022, but due to a shortfall in the European energy supply, it was extended until April 2023.
2/ This comes at a time when Germany has been temporarily reviving coal plants to support electricity generation amid fears of gas shortages.
"Reductions in nuclear electricity production were offset by increases in coal-fired production & electricity imports".
3/ The country remains one of Western Europe's largest users of coal as a means of producing electricity, but don't take the headlines at face value.
4/ Germany has gradually been reducing its reliance on coal over the last few decades while increasing its adoption of renewable sources of energy.
The measures taken at the onset of the pandemic & Ukraine war may be temporary in nature.
