[2/8] Stress management: Remember the 40-30-40 rule. 40% Knowledge 30% Application 40% Nerves. The better you hold your nerves, the better you'll perform.
[3/8] Time management: During practice, devise a technique of your own for managing time. I used to divide every block (40 Qs per 60 minutes) into four sub-blocks (10 Qs per 15 minutes). Something that helped me a lot.
[4/8] Reading the question tactically: Read the last statement first to give you an idea of the question being asked. Next, read the whole statement and HIGHLIGHT the important points according to the question. Remember that 1 thorough read is better than 3 fast reads.
[5/8] Flagging questions: There will always be questions which WILL leave you completely blank. Many times they are experimental questions to test your stress management skills. So, instead of wasting too much time, give a read, take a possible guess and flag it. Come back later.
[6/8] Process of elimination: Not sure about the correct answer? Use the process of elimination to narrow down your choices. This can increase your chances of selecting the right answer, even if you're not certain. Develop this skill when practising UWorld.
[7/8] Take breaks: An 8-hour exam can leave you drained. So remember to use your breaks tactically. Plan them in advance. Stretch, walk around, sing, hydrate, use protein bars or chocolates. Anything that keeps you motivated.
[8/8] Review your answers: Try saving 5-10 minutes every block to review your answers, especially the flagged questions.
And once you submit your block, DON'T THINK ABOUT IT DURING THE BREAK. Prepare for the next.
Good luck! 🍀 #USMLEStep1
