Barely a stone's throw from Mandai #Pune at the southern end of Bhau Maharaj Bol is the Thorat Chowk known to Punekars as Ratan Cycle Chowk. At this Chowk are located traditional #food shops that have their own speciality. Relatively less known they are a foodies delight !
The Unchi Pharsan House is known for quality 'pharsan'. In business since 1947 specialities include the white sweet potato chivda, the red spiced Potato chivda, shev, Dal moth, khari bundi and other items.
Just opposite is the Rajesh Bhel Kendra. The shop has been in existence since 90 years. The bhel tastes wonderful and unique because of the chutney that has hints of ginger. During the season expect raw mango bit in the bhel too. Be sure to taste it.
M/s Hingangave is known for Chirote. Apratim Chirote proclaims the board and explains its speciality too. Nowhere else can one get 'chirote' that are so fresh, crisp, light and tasty. However demand outstrips supply, only a limited quantity is made that sell off in no time.
Jaywantrao Kushaba Dhile-Dhile Bhelwale have been in business since 1948 selling dry bhel, churmure etc. Dry bhel was a poor's snack or even meal when eaten with raw uncut onion. The green chili thecha/kharda that comes free with the bhel here is intense but worth the tears shed.
The newest entrant here is the Deepak Dairy. If you want the freshest and softest raw paneer in town, head to the shop. Milk and other milk products like basundi/rabdi, lassi, dahi are also of very good quality.
A single Chowk in Pune in the 'Gaon' (old city) area has so many unique flavours. There are many places like these with unique offering in the city. It is surely a foodies delight !
