The Scientific Significance of Sanji
It seems a long time ago now, but it was actually only a few arcs ago that we were in Zou.
It was here that we learned the truth about Sanji's family lineage. His real name is Vinsmoke Sanji.
During Whole Cake Island, we learned that Sanji & his siblings had been subjected to genetic experiments by their father, Judge.
Whilst his brothers had awakened these genetic augmentations, it seemed that Sanji's had failed to manifest.
We learned later that the core principle of this experiment was the manipulation of Lineage Factors, or Bloodline Elements. Which is effectively DNA.
It was revealed that Judge once worked with Vegapunk & together they had discovered the existence of Lineage Factors.
In real life, the concept of DNA was discovered & explained by scientists, James Watson & Francis Crick in 1953.
So why was it that Sanji was the only apparent failure in this experiment. He was one of four quadruplets, so how was it that only he was affected?
This comes down to the intervention of his mother, Sora, who attempted to prevent the experiment by poisoning herself.
The main motivation for Sora's intervention was that she did not want her children to become emotionless monsters. Such a thing would be un-human.
Despite her efforts, the effects of her intervention only seemed to succeed in one child, Sanji.
Sanji retained his emotions.
Whilst Judge & his brothers considered Sanji to be a failure, it was clear that the kind hearted boy was the pride and joy of his mother. Reiju was the only other person to recognised this.
However, much more recently, in Wano, we learned that Sanji was not a failure after all. Despite retaining his human capacity for emotions, somehow, he still awakened his Lineage Factor augmentations.
With the benefit of hindsight, we can look back & understand that this has always been the case. Sanji was never a failure, the trigger for his powers was just different.
Instead of causing emotional inhibition, his emotions became what fuelled his power.
Since the introduction of Diable Jambe, we have seen that Sanji has been able to activate strange powers, such as igniting his legs on fire, through raw emotion.
We see time & time again, that in moments of high emotion, Sanji is able to activate this power.
This demonstrates that Sanji is not actually a failure & his genetic augmentations have awakened. However, the significance does not stop there.
The subject of emotions and humanity also connects to the principles of Devil Fruits.
We learned way back in Punk Hazard, that failed Zoan Awakenings cause the user to lose their mind and humanity. They become 'unfeeling monsters'.
This similarity is most likely not a coincidence.
As Vegapunk more recently explained, most Zoan Awakenings overwhelm the user's mind & they lose their humanity. However, it is possible to have a successful awakening.
The same likely applies to the Lineage Factor manipulation done in Judge's experiment.
This connection may seem like a reach, but it actually has a lot of valid basis. In fact, Oda has hinted at this himself already.
In SBS Vol 45: Someone asked if there was a connection between Sanji's swirly eyebrows and te pattern on Devil Fruits.
Oda said this in response.
From this, we can understand that the Lineage Factor manipulation done in Judges experiments works very much in the same way as the Lineage Factor alteration caused by consuming Devil Fruits does.
This makes it understandable why Vegapunk was arrested following the discovery.
Since Sanji's dormant genetic augmentations have awakened, it seems that his eyebrows flip sides when they are activated.
This leads us to two other potential connections.
At the start of his fight with Queen, Queen questioned how Sanji had the ability to ignite his limbs in to flames. "I know you ain't a Lunarian."
With this in mind, isn't it interesting how similar the effect of Sanji's eyebrows is to the on-off effects of the Lunarian flame?
It seems like it's not a coincidence that, immediately after Sanji blocked S-Shark without even defending, the every next thing that is mentioned is the Lunarian flame defence.
Sanji's powers work in almost exactly the same way.
The next potential significance of the swirly eyebrows is less tangible & has not yet manifested in to anything relevant.
However, there is a lot of what seems to be foreshadowing Sanji's association with space.
Once again, this association is alluded to through an SBS & Oda has main several indirect references throughout the story.
The ship Sanji boarded when escaping Germa was called, The Orbit & he is often depicted star gazing in cover pages
What could the relevance of this be? Well, many people have theorised for a long time that eventually the One Piece story will take us in to space.
It seems like it's not a coincidence then, that Vegapunk's island is full of space ship style designs & space monsters.
It seems like Oda is setting up for the story to take us in to space at some point soon & it seems like Sanji will be at the forefront of this event.
Vegapunk seems to have been trying to achieve space travel already.
To conclude. Sanji is the single most important character when it comes to understanding the significance of Lineage Factors. He is the connection between all of the different concepts that revolve around Lineage Factors.
On top of this. It seems like Oda has been using Sanji throughout the story to hint that we will eventually travel to space.
Overall. Sanji is the single most significant character to the science of the One Piece world.
That's about all I've got for this one. Thanks for reading 🙏
