People ask me if they should become a designer now that AI might take over our jobs in a few years.
I'm no expert on AI, but from what I've seen and heard - here's my take on it:
1) What I think will happen is that low-entry jobs will get replaced, most likely.
I think senior designers with 3-4+ years of exp will be designing for AI and using it as a resource to 10x or 100x their productive output.
2) There still will need to be people handling the AI, running prompts, teaching it, and correcting.
They say that by 2026 GPT will run out of resources to learn on the internet. If we stop posting new content, AI will start teaching itself.
It needs fresh data.
3) Also, AI is not creative. It's a tool. It can assist with tasks, but it can't replace human intuition and creativity (at least not for a while!).
UX and UI design is too complex of a field that requires an understanding of user needs, behaviour, and psychology.
4) What I think will happen is that we'll be using AI to generate low-fi wireframes, prototype flows, or create style guides and design systems based on global styles.
Maybe even to generate some visuals and imagery.
5) On the UX front, I think we'll use it to test products, gather data based on user behavior (heatmaps, etc), and provide analytical insights that can help to improve the overall user experience.
I'm already using it to organize my research findings - it's amazing!
6) So, to answer this question one more time.
Yes, I think AI will replace some of the entry-level jobs but people that are passionate about this industry will adapt and use AI to their advantage.
7) If you're thinking if it's a good idea to start a new career in UX/UI design, I can't help you make a decision.
I think it's better now than 2 or 3 years from now. By that time you'll be a senior designer, much harder to replace by AI.
8) Also, remember that most job titles didn't exist even 10 years ago, and the rise of AI will probably create a bunch of jobs that don't exist yet.
If I were starting over, I'd still choose UX/UI as my career.
Design needs a human touch.
Do you think AI will replace most design jobs or help us become 100x more productive?
